It was the last final to be played with Victorian pitch markings...The six-yard-box, we know today, consisted of two semi-circles. Penalties were taken from anywhere along the solid white 12-yard line. The remaining players had to stand behind the intermittent white line as the kick was taken. Here is Billy Barnes scoring the winning goal, in a 2-1 victory, for Sheffield United (Att: 33,068).
I also remember seeing him. He was extremely fast. It was an age when wingers stayed on the wing and dribbled up to the full back. McClelland dispensed with fancy footwork - he would push the ball past the back and beat him for speed. I have an unreliable memory of seeing him unsuccessfully trying that tactic on Wilson, England's 1966 world cup back who was paying 2nd division football, I think Wilson was playing for Huddersfield. It didn't work - Wilson was faster! Wilson was replaced in the world cup winning side by Cohen of Fulham before the final. Another then 2nd division player.
Ray Wilson played left back in the final, George Cohen was the right back in the WC final. I think you might be mistaking Wilson for Armfield, the previoius right back.
I stand corrected Ides - I did say it was an unreliable memory!!!!! It is interesting to reflect that England had two full backs form 2nd division clubs. It is hard to imagine that the equivalent could happen now which is indicative of the gap that has opened up between the first and second tiers of the game.
