This is definitely the sliding doors moment for me. When we got Puel and the players we sold/signed that season I knew it was the beginning of the end, out the door went bold and exciting and instead everything was safe and affordable. And I was saying it for years and years that Brighton and Brentford would meet the same fate and I really feel like both of those clubs will continue to get chopped in the knees by the big 6 every season. The game isn’t built for teams to slowly build year after year. 14 of the PL teams are there as a shop window to the Top 6 and unfortunately our club folded on every single key player we had in that era and sold them as soon as they could. Choosing to opt for short term gains as opposed to a long term team. It’s why I fail to get excited about anything within football now, I know if we get a good manager he will only be with us a year and I know as soon as Dibling has 15/20 great games in a row we will be shipping him off to the highest bidder. It’s why Markus was so beloved, he wanted to build something and I have no question that if he was still with us he would have tried keep those we let go so easily. But now I don’t see the point in dreaming because we’ve all seen it first hand and it’s why we are in the position we are in, you can’t keep selling your best and expecting results. Heck we just had a player get player of the season and the entire transfer window was about how he was definitely going to leave. Luckily he didn’t but even that just shows you that we don’t keep our gold, we are a selling club through and through.
Three wins in four for Van Nistelrooy. Won two cups with PSV. Soon to be a free agent. Just saying...
Difficult to know how to respond to this. I think you'll find most teams in, say, 8-14 th positions are closer to being relegated than winning the title. We've had some awful managers. However, Puel did what he could with the resources he had. That Mark Hughes was an improvement, wasn't he? Obviously, you're entitled to your opinion so we'll have to agree to disagree.
Puel is the modern day Chris Nicholl having the misfortune to follow popular and successful managers but did a decent job given the circumstances with an inferior squad. He explained that the reason for the slower more possession play at the start was to guard against burn out with the crowded fixture list but the football became more expansive after the new year and a cup final and top eight finish was not reason to get rid of him. I think he suffered from his quiet personality and was percieved to be dull in interviews. One thing is true, the standard of football dropped sharply after he was sacked.
As mentioned earlier… this is the kind of thing we should be absolutely tripping over ourselves to get done if he’s available. Let’s face it, we’re down, but he could elevate the status of the club if he got us playing a style that suited the players, we know the players and fans would be behind him, even if he only accepted a short term contract until the end of the season. We could then stand a better chance of getting a high profile replacement in, rather than that weird name that always appears to appear low down on the betting list that ultimately has ended up being our next manager for SRs tenure…
Not sure I'd get him on a short term contract. I'd go for three years with a massive **** off bonus if he pulls off a miracle. He's very, very young in management terms, and might be up for getting us promoted with what would be a seriously strong squad. Also think he's a 'name' that will convince players to stay/bring in decent signings.
I will, though, eat my head if someone as high profile a Van Nistelrooy spends more than 20 seconds considering a move to us.
Yeah no chance he comes here especially as the media love in for him has started so he should get a better job
To be fair, I have it on good authority that Ronald only took the job as he wanted to see one of our fans eat his own head. I have it on similar authority that he left as said fan still hadn’t chomped his own head off. I’m not one to point the finger at what went wrong, but
Let's wait until the Chelsea v Arsenal coverage finishes on Sky as Potter has to agree to take over before Russ can go
Remember the opinion that we didn’t want mid table mediocrity. How we laughed! If only we could achieve that now.
Just watched TSP live and someone posted that the betting on RM being sacked has been frozen. Has it happened?
