By 1972 , along with a mate of mine..both born and bred in Sunderland..we`d been students in Nottingham where we`d played decent football at University and College level We`d moved back to Sunderland but went back to play for this Sunday league side We played "for fun" at the weekend for this team called Bulwell The team was looked after by a couple in their 80`s who used to go every week to the lace market and get remnants for us to use as tie ups...They were so ancient we thought they might not make it through every match. They`d advertised in a local paper cos they didnt have any players....so when we all turned up they couldnt believe it The old man was called Fred and showed everyone who signed the signing on papers of Bertie Mee who`d played for them in the mists of time...almost like an initiation... Anyway the weekend of this reunion match we`d had a party One of the lads (from Durham) knew young Martin and John Robertson...used to drop them cotton fashion shirts as I remember...Jesus how times have changed!!...Whether it was because I was from Sunderland or not...I dont know...I remember talking to Martin O`Neill for ages...I remember John Robertson being really quiet not letting on to all the girls who he was..."Im an enterrrrtainer..." But the most impressive thing for me was on the Sunday they both turned up and watched us play...close together talking the whole match....in a fine rain JR said my mate who Id known since childhood playing in the street football was "Brilliant"....I had to smack him one.... Ive just read some stuff inferring Martin O`Neill was looking for a pay day...If you were asking me...I`d say this mans not much interested in money now.` more likely to be driven by principle and passion . I still remember some of the things he said that night about players of the day.And its been really funny watching him over the years...not much different from that Sunday....just four people watching our game tho!....I hope JR comes out of semi retirement for one last throw of the dice!
I don't know how true it is but I heard that O'Neill was dropped by Cloughie at Forrest, so he asked him why he was playing in the second team, Cloughie replied because I haven't got a third team.
I have a good education, and like to put it to good use - yes. Being relatively young myself, I am horrified with the youth of today butchering the English language. I like to come on here and love to read peoples opinions on all things SAFC - whether or not I agree with them, I still like to hear fellow supporters voice their love for this club. Imagine you came on here Vince and read someone write an article written in 'text' as the kids today love to do, thinking they only have 180 characters to get their point across. "iT wuz gr8 2 c Shrt steep up & sk Broce coz hes woz ah uzlez cunnt innit" However, after getting through his article - it was a nice read to see that our (hopefully) new manager is a great bloke and takes great interest in the supporters and their footballing activities
yes but this is a sunderland forum for all fans educated or not there are all welcome and some times that is the only text speake they can use cheers

Ok, maybe it came across a bit wrong. I wasn't having a dig. However, using proper punctuation and syntax would have helped him get his point across better. And why is everyone getting so high and mighty all of a sudden? You know you were thinking about it when you read it. Good on Dyavvy for sharing that with us, and I did enjoy reading about his interaction with MoN and JR. For those on here that know me, they know I don't start **** or wum. My education wasn't pointed out by me, I was merely acknowledging what Vince pointed out.
HH quit whilst you are ahead mate, i had a right barney on here a few months back over a similar thing, its just not worth it . (but mine went about 10 pages and 100 posts).

In fact I love it so much I just about managed to take a second degree in my life ....now finished....as a teacher.....for over 35 years ....lol .....Not offended at all by HH....pleased you liked it in the end HH.....just picked out a missing apostrophe in your " peoples (`) thoughts"...and not sure its the right expression....."thoughts of Peoples" doesnt hang right either........ The adverbial clause, "hopefully", should also be bounded thus: (,hopefully,), by two commas ,as shown here ..... but what the hell! Truth is, that kind of subject and predicate analysis can get in the way of a good story .........
......sorry just checked "hopefully" was of course not an adverbial clause,but "adjectival" as it referred to "new manager".......Dyavvy
