Exactly my thoughts on the matter. Brazil tried a similar experiment with Dani Alves as they also had Maicon at right back, and didn't have a good right winger, they tried Alves there, it didn't work at all, and he looked lost positionally. I feel the same would happen with Johnson.

I'd personally like to see Maxi on the right, and Bellamy on the left. Doubt it will happen though.

The OP is right in that we have lots of options in the wide and midfield areas, I am worried about Lucas being out for the season and think that long term Gerrard has to cover that position. Will he get fit and stay fit though? Spearing is the one to cover short term imo and may surprise me.

My team for this would be

    Pepe

    Johnson, Skrtel, Agger, Enrique

    Henderson, Spearing, Adam

    Maxi, Suarez, Bellamy

I doubt it will happen though, and we'll more than likely see Kuyt and Downing instead of Maxi and Bellamy. Although I hope I'm wrong on that one.

Dunno mate, I reckon Gerrard could play as well as a DM as most players in the league can, but I much prefer having him in and around the opposition penalty box. Could we get someone as a short term stop gap in at DM, like Lassana Diarra on loan, as he seems to be out of favour at Madrid?

Agree on Spearing being the short term cover, at least, for Lucas. He'll have plenty of games before the January transfer window to prove himself capable, or incapable, of filling Lucas' shoes on a consistent basis anyway. If he does well, then there's not much point buying a short term replacement for Lucas, but if he's doing poorly then I wouldn't mind us going for someone like Diarra on loan, or Flamini who has about 6 months left on his contract. No idea if they are realistic options or not, though?

I just think that we need to slow him down and use his football brain to get a few more years from him. I would love to have him back to his old self but does that player still exist?

agger would play every time if he managed to avoid injuries - he is pure class and has the composure that we badly need at the back
