She subsequently became a Labour MP and was education minister in Clement Attlee’s post war Communist government. She died in office in 1947. “Red Ellen” met Trotsky on a visit to Russia in 1921. When she first stood for Parliament, she came third in the Ashton-under-Lyne seat that is now held by another famous redhead that holidays in Ibiza.

How many pensioners do you know that are currently on PAYE and will automatically have tax deducted?

The irony is that Self Assessment has moved online, so all those pensioners will have to go on the internet to complete their tax returns. That should be interesting when HMRC starts sending out letters telling them that they have not paid their taxes.

Of course this does assume that millions of those pensioners have not frozen to death by then in the cause of National Socialism.
