Xavi be another horrific appointment. That club is toast. It simply isn’t a player anymore. It’s at least a decade behind the top 3 and several years behind Chelsea, Spurs and Villa. Not just Xavi's profile as a player, he's also Spanish so has more "glamour" attached to his name than Potter. Potter would be a sensible choice to rebuild them over time, but he's not glamorous or "sexy" enough for a chunk of their fan base, the same fan base chunk that will demand instant success and write Potter off for failing at Chelsea (not withstanding that Sir Alex Ferguson failed at St. Mirren early in his career). The truth is that ever since the Glazers got involved and brought in Ed Woodward, Man U have been reaping the consequences of poor commercial decisions made in recruitment. Signing players for what commercial benefits instead of team benefits, clashing with and undermining managers visions for the team because player x will sell more shirts and bring in more sponsorship money. You only need to look at the resigning of Ronaldo to see that, and then consider how much damage did his ego and petulance do in the dressing room? There's no clear strategy on recruitment, Ten Hag seems to have his favourites and then clash with ones who aren't. And if you ask me the outright cheek of wanting government leveling up money to be given to them to to rebuild Old Trafford is disgusting. Yeah, the ground might be run down now because the Glazers haven't bothered investing in it for years, but what should hundreds of millions be directed there instead of on proper infrastructure projects the country needs, just for a bit of dick waving about having a bigger stadium than Wembley?
I think Simeone is just about the only manager on the planet who could sort United out relatively quickly and get them competing again. Potter would be a good choice although they'd have to be patient with him. Xavi I don't know much about as a coach but I'd be surprised if his reputation wasn't being inflated by his achievements as a player.

On the one hand I should be surprised. He won the FA cup last season. On the other I am not surprised as it is all about champions league and revenue streams for Man Utd. Since Fergie they have lost any sense of identity on the pitch. They are the epitome of a business not a football club now. When you look at big clubs, who are successful, there is often a stability in the head coach role. Man City, Arsenal, Liverpool have all shown patience and have massively improved as a result. Utd have done the opposite, as have Chelsea. I look on with real interest as to who the next coach will be. They need to appoint for the long term imo. Someone who will bring the footballing identity to them, but someone who they are going to trust ahead of some of their players. Dancing round the handbags with Xavi or Zidanne wont cut it imo. They need someone who will rebuild brick by brick. Somebody like Thomas Frank would be perfect there imo. Emery would be another who would fit the bill.
Some really interesting options for United if they do the search properly. Amorim at Sporting, Hoeneß at Stuttgart, Frank at Brentford, I know he's just been appointed but Hürzeler at Brighton is going right to the top in my opinion so why not get him now, Rose at Leipzig. I do think their first call should be Nagelsmann though.
