He's right and the same thing used to happen with Man Utd when Fergie was there. It's not outright favouritism, but there's definitely a subconscious tendency to favour these teams.

Excellent video that. I like it because for me it says when does gamemanship become cheating. Suppose it depends on what the ref was shown by var, and what the rules say. I love the way he goes down because he knew his tactics would see a ball incoming, but the officials all had chance to overturn the decision. Sorry I mustn't laugh.
