With a management career that started back in the 1980's, is it a 'bit late in the day' for the Irishman to start over?

Can anyone recall what happened at Norwich City when he took over?
He wasn't there very long and you wonder now, as he approaches his 60th birthday, if he's about to go a bit 'Steve Coppell' on the football world?

His departure from Aston Villa wasn't exactly plain sailing and are Sunderland about to expose themselves to more potential heartache?.

I read that he was a childhood fan of the Wearside club, but is that a good thing?
Surely you can apply too much pressure to yourself if there is emotional investment involved in every decision?

I think an example of this was Alan Shearer's 8-game stint as manager at Newcastle United - he put far too much pressure on himself and made bad decisions like employing Ian Dowie and playing 3 at the back against Liverpool.

Is there a danger that for Martin O'Neill, the 'magic has faded' and he's simply going there knowing that his best days are behind him and looking for a final pay-day ala Fabio Capello?

Joker will he ever be funny?
Or will he continue to embarrass himself with the most inappropriate user name ever?

I was living in Norwich when he briefly managed them. He last about 6 months and he had a falling out with the chairman. Can't recall what it was about though.

He's a good manager though and certainly better than some we've had in the past.

He's retired now or 'quit' as they say.

As he did from Manchester City, Reading, Bristol City...

I don't think the length of his career is a problem. The only possible problem is that he's been out of management for so long. If you take this long out of ANY profession in an industry which moves at such a fast pace, then there may be rustiness issues.

It really depends on whether he's been keeping himself up to speed while he's been out of work, especially when it comes to tactics, opposition strengths, player markets and so on.

I think he'll do a job to be honest. After Bruce things can only get better for that lot. Sure we would've all liked to see Bruce in a job for a bit longer, but for the sake of football I think they've done the right thing! He's a good manager and I'll admit after Hughton I would've had O'Neill over Pardew any day. That's not the case now obviously as Pardew has proven himself to be a brilliant manager, but I'm afraid Sunderland can only improve with O'Neill in charge.

I don't think you can even vaguely compare O'Neill to Shearer. He's a good manager and there's no way he's allowed football to pass him by since leaving Villa, bit defensive but he'll get results which is what Sunderland need going into next year.

    Don't talk ****e man.

I'm asking a question but you're too paranoid to attempt an answer? <doh>...

I think his influence was starting to fade in the latter part of his time with Aston Villa - but I suppose you're just too damaged to enter into discussion these days. <ok>

Nope. I enjoy seeing little toilet droppings such as yourself get all hot and bothered over my posts too much. Now you are one of my little barcode bitches, I shall endeavour to keep you frothing at the mouth much more often.

Presumably the exact same thing that you were saying when Keegan came back here? Its absolutely correct, if he's been doing his homework he'll be decent, if not he's starting with a massive disadvantage. I'm not convinced you even read his post...
