Probably been done to death, but I have just watched a great war film, The Forgotten Battle on Netflix.
We just watched The Ballad of Buster Scruggs the other night, and reallyt enjoyed it. It's got a bit of everything, and a real refreshing change to most of the generic formulaic crap that's out. I can't believe I didn't watch it sooner. Anyone that's unaware, it's 6 different short stories, so if you don't like the first one (but who wouldn't, it's great?), stick with it and see if you like the others.
I really enjoyed it, a few of them really stuck in my mind. I especially liked the gold miner and the one with Liam Neeson and Harry Melling, I'm a big fan of that kind of dark humour and the acting from Melling was a masterclass. As you say stick with it as they're all different, although the first one is probably the one that has the least similar tone to the others.
Just finished A Cure for Wellness, I'd seen it before but watched it again with the wife and enjoyed it both times. Similar sort of genre as Shutter Island, not the same by any means, it's more of a gothic horror, and probably not as good on paper but personally I prefer it.
Finished watching Wes Anderson's latest, Asteroid City, tonight. I thought I was going to quite like it halfway through but I didn't in the end. His older films (Rushmore, Royal Tenenbaums, Life Aquatic) had humour, visual style, cracking soundtracks and emotional scenes that punch you in the gut because as weird as it all is you care about the characters. Asteroid just has visuals and a bit of humour, he seems to be increasingly determined to go out of his way to highlight how fake it all is and that you shouldn't care about anything that happens. Far too many celebrity cameos too, just to add to the feeling of none of it being believable or having any interest in being so.
Totally agree Nacho. I think I turned this off towards the end. I loved some of his previous work like Fantastic Mr Fox and Grand Budapest Hotel. But this was just so random....
Random is the word, none of it hung together. The odd thing is that it's all intentional, there's not a millisecond of screen time that isn't carefully planned. Have you seen his older films like the ones I mentioned? Fantastic Mr Fox was excellent but Rushmore through to The Darjeeling Limited was his golden era, some of my favourite films.
I saw the Henry Sugar one but didn't like it and ditched the idea of watching the others. I love the book but didn't feel he did it justice, was just Cumberbatch rapping out dialogue for 40 minutes with no emotion or attempt to draw the viewer in. I used to like his clean style because I enjoy it and he used to mix it with relatable human issues but he's gone far too clinical and sanitised now.
Interesting, I loved it. I do like his style though. Strangely though, I rewatched the Royal Tenenbaums a few weeks back and didn't enjoy as much as had previously. Not seen Asteroid City yet.
My least favourite of that era I'd say, we're going to rewatch them starting from Rushmore it'll be interesting to see if I like them as much as I remember.
I’ve watched them all. I enjoyed them tbh. I must have read the stories they’re based on as I read a fair bit of Dahl in my twenties but don’t recall them from the adaptations.
