Documentary on ITV about their fight in 95 on Monday night. Brutal fight with an horrific ending. http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/blog/2011/dec/02/nigel-benn-gerald-mcclellan-fight
The lyrics to Who killed Davey Moore, Who killed Davey Moore Why an’ what’s the reason for? “Not I,” says the referee “Don’t point your finger at me I could’ve stopped it in the eighth An’ maybe kept him from his fate But the crowd would’ve booed, I’m sure At not gettin’ their money’s worth It’s too bad he had to go But there was a pressure on me too, you know It wasn’t me that made him fall No, you can’t blame me at all” Who killed Davey Moore Why an’ what’s the reason for? “Not us,” says the angry crowd Whose screams filled the arena loud “It’s too bad he died that night But we just like to see a fight We didn’t mean for him t’ meet his death We just meant to see some sweat There ain’t nothing wrong in that It wasn’t us that made him fall No, you can’t blame us at all” Who killed Davey Moore Why an’ what’s the reason for? “Not me,” says his manager Puffing on a big cigar “It’s hard to say, it’s hard to tell I always thought that he was well It’s too bad for his wife an’ kids he’s dead But if he was sick, he should’ve said It wasn’t me that made him fall No, you can’t blame me at all” Who killed Davey Moore Why an’ what’s the reason for? “Not me,” says the gambling man With his ticket stub still in his hand “It wasn’t me that knocked him down My hands never touched him none I didn’t commit no ugly sin Anyway, I put money on him to win It wasn’t me that made him fall No, you can’t blame me at all” Who killed Davey Moore Why an’ what’s the reason for? “Not me,” says the boxing writer Pounding print on his old typewriter Sayin’, “Boxing ain’t to blame There’s just as much danger in a football game” Sayin’, “Fistfighting is here to stay It’s just the old American way It wasn’t me that made him fall No, you can’t blame me at all” Who killed Davey Moore Why an’ what’s the reason for? “Not me,” says the man whose fists Laid him low in a cloud of mist Who came here from Cuba’s door Where boxing ain’t allowed no more “I hit him, yes, it’s true But that’s what I am paid to do Don’t say ‘murder,’ don’t say ‘kill’ It was destiny, it was God’s will” Who killed Davey Moore Why an’ what’s the reason for?
Without the final outcome surely one of the greatest fights ever.Think the Watson fight was on par too.
Yep they were both great fights in a good era for British boxers. Bit like the Hearns Hagler Leonard Duran era in the 80's. I know they know and accept the risks in the ring but some of the things they do, they shouldnt such as making weight. It says in the article Mclellan came in 2llbs under and Steward thinks he cut weight illegally to make it places them at risk. They reckon Ali used to do that too.
I'm looking forward to seeing this, I knew Benn when he was fighting, I was living in south London and he was mates with a couple of lads I knew, he used to get us into all the VIP areas in the West End.
Just watched that fight for the first time as it was a bit before I would bother about boxing (I was more interested in Brum and Peggy Patch in 1995). Surely is a great fight and shame about the outcome. More interested in UFC myself though, more of an offensive and diverse sport to me. Boxing tends to be alot of defensive standing off and hitting at the right time, UFC is just all out mayhem, not to mention they don't have those pussy gloves on either.
Watch the Hagler Hearns fight mate, think it got voted the best 5 rounds ever. Boxing gloves do more damage long term than UFC mitts. A good punch in UFc is all it takes. With boxing its the accumulation of concussive head shots that leads to the long term damage in later life.
Oh I know yeah, those boxing gloves don't half pack a punch, my mate used to have a punchbag and 2 sets of gloves in his garage but when he threw parties we ended up whacking each other instead!! But I think when watching a fight you'd rather see the short term damage that ufc gloves would cause, rather than sit there thinking 'this guys going to be a cabbage in 20 years time'. I'll have to have a look at that fight then
Our father, who art in the ring, boxing be thy name, thy left hook come, thy knockout will be done in Hull as it is in Vegas, give us this day our daily spar and forgive us our low blows as we forgive those who low blow agianst us lead us not into their right hands and deliver us from knockdowns for thine is the footwork the jab and the body shot for ever and ever Amen (D. Mitchell)
Boxing gloves INCREASE the amount of punching. Punching hard with thinner gloves breaks the hand before the head. Taking nothing away from the proponents, UF and MMA are the lesser of all the disciplines and usually just end up in hugging in my opinion. Top level Boxing is a far, far more skilled art.
Hate it when it ends up in hugging and floor grappling, so boring to watch. But when UFC is good it's better than any other fighting form IMO, it's just a proper brawl and when they go down, you see what you wanna see, jumping on each others heads and stuff, not dragged apart by the ref.
To each their own. That'd wear thin as a spectacle very, very quickly for me, I prefer the craft, skill and guile. The odd bits of mma and UF I've seen, you have to plough through an extraordinary amount of playground type dross and hype before there's much action and then what there is seems limited.
Hate boxing , don't see the point of it .. don't think watching a couple of blokes beat the **** out of each other is even a sport..
Absolutely ace!!!! (Not)
Paret is reported to have taunted Griffith pre fight accusing him of being homosexual. Brings it back to...............
Glad McLellan got knocked senseless, dog fighting is disgusting and pure evil and one reaps what they sow. Sick bastard deserves everything he got, he's paying the price for his own crimes.
