Wonder what will happen when the HMRC need to send back many millions of reclaimed VAT.

My understanding is that all schools have to register for VAT, whether they intend to claim back or not.

Those schools not passing it on, still have to pay over the VAT, so again will have to be VAT registered.

The SEN schools are the ones who wont have much to claim back by the looks of it, which tend to be smaller in pupil numbers. I guess these ones may be the ones to close if there are shortages of children.

The other schools, well I'd imagine they could make hay while the sun shines.

I wasnt totally sure on the authenticity of the report where it suggested the HMRC confirmed this is true. I mean if it is, I wonder just how much VAT can be claimed back over the 10-year period.

Having run a company before leaving the UK authenticity of the report and whether or not the VAT can be claimed needs clarification. What is clear is that the number of pupils is rising.
"The number of children attending private schools in England has risen, new figures show, despite claims that families are being priced out by Labour’s plan to add VAT to school fees.

The Independent Schools Council (ISC) said last month that pupil numbers had fallen – a sign, they said, that schools were already starting to see “the impact of VAT looming on the horizon”.

But official Department for Education (DfE) data published last week shows that as of this January, the number of pupils in independent schools in England was 593,486, up from 591,954 the year before and an increase of 24,150 on 2020-21.

Not so much touched a nerve, as completely ignored the facts.

So, you think billionaires who abuse their wealth to bully people who save lives are cool?

If one of Labour's key pledges is to reduce emissions, why did they do this:

Lord Deben, the Conservative environment minister who introduced the landfill tax in 1996, told the BBC: “We’ve got too many incinerators, and we shouldn’t have any more… they begin to distort our ability to recycle.”

And yet, incinerators are still being built in England. The UK government approved a new £150m site in Dorset last month, overturning the local council’s decision to block it.

Dorset Council leader Nick Ireland told the BBC at the time that it "kneecaps" the county’s efforts to achieve their "net zero" target - the goal of no longer adding to carbon emissions by 2050.

Seems at odds with their policy.

Almost as if they don't have much of a clue about what to do.

It is why I don't get politics, I said the same about the Tories, they were clueless and corrupt, and I don't believe Labour are much different.

This isn't a direct slur on Labour - more around the political system.

The whole thing needs a full review, ripping up and starting again.

We will have this bollocks, continuously, for eternity. Well, slightly earlier as Labour will have ****ed the planet by then :emoticon-0105-wink:

I am with you on this one. I wish I could vote Green and have it mean something. This is not Labour but Tory Light - which is why I am surprised it is the right (and not us on the left) giving them a hard time.

Anyway, I guess it all kicks off with the budget.

It's depressing that people think like this. I don't go to work ti improve air quality for human health thinking of making up data or increasing government spending (neither occur).

Recent studies find no discernible evidence for a change in the warming rate since 1970.

There is no climate crisis. It’s all hoax to tax you more and control the population.

The main issue is non-experts being in charge of departments or councils with little expertise. Financial constraints and lack of expert knowledge are usually the issue I think.

Sand. Buried. Head. In. Have you been totally obvlious to the damage Hurricane's Milton and Helene have caused and why they were such powerful storms?

It is a PROVEN FACT that hurricanes have been strengthened by the ever increasing ocean temperatures - caused by climate change. The Gulf of Mexico is effectively a turbo boost for hurricanes, the temperature of the water is so high.

First of all you are being incredibly disrespectful to say that I am lying and making things up.

Secondly, as always you are conflating different issues. This study is solely modelling and hand picked whereas I can find multiple examples where evidence disagrees.

I was also talking about air quality with is completely different from warming. By the way all of this net migration is accelerated by climate change in poorer countries but let's ignore this.

I am sad you have such a brainwashed mindset. Your opinion is no more valid than mine. P.s. I am on a UN Climate task group so I have some knowledge and all my work is funded privately.

    Blocked.

Well there have been rebellions and criticism from the left. 7 of the most left-wing Labour MPs lost the whip for voting against the government in July and I think 12 others rebelled on the winter fuel allowance. But for whatever reason this hasn't captured the public attention. If I had to guess why I'd say it's partly because the MPs on the left-wing of the Labour party aren't generally seen as that credible or capable, partly because there have been other negative political stories like the donations one to distract from it and partly because Starmer has such a vast majority that at the moment it's not a major problem for him. If he had a smaller majority and there was a chance these rebellions would see him lose votes it would get a lot more attention.

I think it is not just credibility of the left but the entire restructuring of the party that Starmer has gone through. There simply aren't enough "lefties" to be an issue for him.
