I don't think anyone watching footage of what happened on October 7th last year can fail to be moved by the horror of those events - there have been a few programs recently piecing together footage from Festival attendees and also the Hamas gunmen that are quite shockingly chilling and incredibly sad ... and as a father of 3 daughters who attended a concert at Cardiff Castle this summer it really brought home how a group of kids/ civilians, just enjoying an open air celebration of music, could, in the wrong circumstances, become targets for unimaginable terror and carnage ... That horror endures for the families of those hostages still being held ... All that said, I find what has happened in Gaza since to also be horrific and I struggle to understand how the West can seemingly brush over the wholesale destruction of the territory and the huge number of civilian (child) casualties on a pretext of Israel 'having the right to defend itself'. What has happened in Gaza is not a defensive action - it's ethic cleansing by any measure ... and will it solve the 'Palestinian problem' ? ... not a chance. The next Gazan / Palestinian resistance movement may have a different name to Hamas, but it is also very likely to have far greater numbers, given the deaths amongst so many Gazan families. My hope is that the UN now has the appetite to seek a permanent solution- and whilst Netanyahu and his government won't be happy - that solution has to include a 'sovereign' Palestinian state and the end of illegal occupation of, and settlements in, that sovereign land(s).

They freed someone who was captured as a young child and lived as a slave in a forced marriage for a decade. That sounds like quite a good thing. I think Begum should have faced trial here but I won’t lose sleep over it. Don’t really see the comparison to the poor girl smuggled into Gaza.
