seems to me that although MON signs some good first team players, he also signs some very expensive benchwarmers (esp. since he always seems to play the same 11) which would ultimately limit progression (no more money to spend when your bench is eating up 200k a week)

O'Neill is a very good motivator and I reckon he will be a good appointment, certainly in the short term. Pretty sure they won't get relegated now, when I honestly think they could have if Agent Bruce stayed.

There's some really silly comments here about MoN. He spent a fair bit at Villa but look where he got them. They haven't been half as organised since he left and that's exactly what Sunderland need, organisation. They've got a decent, albeit defencive minded squad and first of all MoN will stop them losing, make them very hard to beat.

I think they'll do alright, top ten finish for them.

MoN is a decent manager but I don't think he has the personality and character to motivate their squad ... And when you look at the players he's inherited and the additional pressure he's gonna pile on himself if he spends in the January window ... it's gonna be a really tough time even for one of the best PL managers . The only bright spot is that MoN will be able to attract decent players ...

I think Martin O'Neil would be a good manager for Sunderland, I can't see their fans being unhappy if they get him. Wolves and Blackburn as their next two games will give them time to find their feet a bit.

I think that MON is one of those managers that you would expect to keep your team in the top 10 every season and sometimes challenge for europe, even if the football his teams play can be pretty dull at times.

It seems to me that the mackems have huge expectations now, so the next few months will be interesting.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I seem to remember we had a interest in him about 5/6 years ago but his wife was ill so he wanted to stay in the Midlands and Newcastle was too far. What has changed?

No way it will go worse for them with O'Neill in charge than Agent Bruce. They have made a good decision, some people on this board need to open their eyes.

I think he'll do well for them. They'll have to be prepared to watch some pretty direct, robust and dull football at times, but his methods are pretty effective. He'll certainly do a hell of a lot better than Bruce. I think there must be some money available too or he wouldn't have come.

It's an appointment that can work in the interim, think he can get the motivation back and getting result. But not so sure of the long term plan, and how will he cope if things go tits up for Sunlan.

Be nice to watch on with interest :D

Can see the derbys being a bit tighter now. Never liked playing O'neils teams.

Some people on the board need to be sensible, MON is a good solid Premiership manager who will usually guarantee any team he manages a top ten place, certainly better than Bruce at any rate and out of Hughes or O'Neill, for me it's a no brainer. Yes he managed in the Scottish League for 5 years but Celtic were utterly and thoroughly dominant in that period - not like now, where both McCoist and Lennon are vying for the "Worst Manager to Ever Win a League" award, and Aston Villa have went backwards to an alarming degree since he left. He's tactically solid, and he'll make sure that Sunderland are difficult to beat, even if they aren't very attacking.

Given time, I fear the Mackems may become a good solid outfit, once he moulds his own team. 2012/13 will be the season to judge him on, this year he just needs to focus on re-establishing them as a middle of the table side.
