Just noted who the Ref is for this one and thought I recognised the name. This was the guy who last did us at Norwich last season. Had a read of our write ups just to refresh. He issued us with 7 yellows and was rated more of a homer than if he was called Simson. Any bets he won't be a homer this time. Anyway, another team near the top once again. We have been doing quite well against the fancied lot but not collecting some points we may perhaps have deserved. This one is home though so maybe just maybe we will surprise yet another club. Once again it won't be an easy afternoon but we have proved we are capable of winning against these clubs. Let me push the boat out and go for an Argyle win for a change.......... COYG
Grimshaw, Mumba, Szucs, Cissoko, Edwards, Whittaker, Obafemi, Gibson, Gyabi, Randell, Al Hajj. Subs Marosi, Houghton, Pleguezuelo, Hardie, Wright, Bundu, Galloway, Issaka, Finn.
2-1...F/T Obafemi...15mins.................Rankin-Costello...86mins. Whittaker...90+7mins Phew...nearly dropped 2pts.
Listen carefully! I will say this only once. For the majority of this game, we were superior to Blackburn Rovers in every respect. They kicked off - presumably we won the toss and chose ends - and when that happens, it seems to take us a while to get going. They made a lot of substitutions in the second half and had a period of about 15 or 20 minutes when we were under pressure. Other than that, it looked like an FA Cup game with a division between the teams. Cissoko could (and some might say should) have had a hat-trick. Obafemi had his best game so far as a No 9 and could have had a second. There were numerous other chances. We can do better too: there were still too many silly misplaced passes but some of that comes from over-reaching ambition rather than lack of ability. Not the worst reason in the world. Wayne Rooney was sent off, apparently for berating the 4th official. Did I mention we could (should) have had two penalties? Whittaker was booked for practically jumping into the crowd when he scored. The crowd loved them both more for it. A spectacularly good performance that wasn’t fully reflected in the result. What a way to go into the break!
Not Distant im just back after a couple drinks after the game, i agree totatly with you, we should have been out of sight at half time, their keeper made a few good saves, but we are as you say giving teams oppurtunities by silly passes in the middle of the park. i think we looked the top 6 side, i cant see black burn being up there more like another boittom 6 side, as for the ref i will let sensible comment on him what a joker.. i was sat behind the dug out and rooney gave the lino grief then the 4th offical .. i think the supporters are well on rooney side now, another 3 points another great atmosphere, good football aslo better footbal now than under shuey .. greta way to finish tho with a late goal but we should have been game over at half time.. entertaining stuff , the next three games we paly that way we get a few points
Where do you start with this game? Firstly Joe you are dead on with the comment Argyle should have been out of sight by half time in this match or rather mismatch. MOM was without doubt their keeper who somehow played a blinder and you would be forgiven for wondering if Argyle would ever beat him twice. Secondly the Officials. The Ref was inconsistant for a good deal of the game but dows like his cards as I pointed out in the opening post to this thread. Deliberate pull back a booking in green but not apparently in pink. Some "challenges" which is putting it loosely deserved a free kick but not even a talking to. They were sometimes way way worse than a tug on a shirt or arm. Cynical would maybe describe them and with a little bit of malice thrown in. The Lino on the Lyndie side was recognisable due to being a long chap. I have seen him before and guess what he was as crap then as he was today. He missed a minimum of 5 clear and obvious offsides. But lets not get downcast. We took the lead very deservedly and then missed a shed load of chances to increase the lead. Their Keeper kept Blackburn in the game without a doubt. Miskicks and chances went begging and you would have to wonder if the ball was ever going to go in. Second half kick off and they did take up the batton and press us. You just knew when we could not score again that it was going to come back to bite our arse. Sure enough it went to 1 - 1. I have to be honest and say that I don't actually know why Rooney did enough to get a red for his protests. I did not see anything that registered to give a free kick to us. The main culprit for their goal was believe it or not Hardie. Just because the ball looks like going out of play does not mean it will and it isn't enough to just hold you arms out and follow it. He should have buried it in the stands and his team mates should have screamed at him to do it. Justice was finally served in the 97th minute when Whittaker scored with his head. Yes correct it was his head after he had blown several chances with his feet. I have just read the Managers comments on the beeb site. Theirs thought they were the only ones who were going to win in the end. I have no idea what he had been watching but it could not haved been t Home Park. The score should have been a minimum of 5 or even 6 to one. It wasn't but the ending to the game was worth the wait and there was no fluke in it either.
I’ve said it before I know but I haven’t eaten enough humble pie yet. I was shocked and alarmed when Rooney was appointed and I just couldn’t square his high profile and chequered history with the modest and professional way the club is run. I was horribly wrong to doubt the club. He’s obviously had hard times at other clubs he’s managed but has thrived in the clear and simple ways things are done at Argyle. The thrashing we got at Sheffield Wednesday was a shocker but since then there’s been steady improvement. The players are obviously willing to run through brick walls for him (and the fans). The club is certainly getting a lot of publicity with him at the helm although as a fan commented after the game “it’s not Wayne Rooney’s Plymouth, it’s Argyle’s Wayne Rooney”. I watched Andre Gray’s “welcome “ interview. He was asked how the deal had taken place, how long had he known? He laughed and said “I heard on Tuesday and I was down here on Wednesday”. Fair enough, he needed a club but we needed a striker too and the raised profile must help even if the media’s sudden interest after years of hardly getting a mention does rankle a bit. Onward and upward. That’s not just a slogan, that’s what’s happening at the moment.
Also a Friend of mines wife was walking in Plymbridge on saturday and and saw a Little mix singer yeh Andre Grays partner.. Seems everyones loves plymouth at the moment .. another wag to attend the games ,, will she sit with Coleen
Sad thing is that if the entire group of Little Mix knocked on my door and sang I still wouldn't recognise them or know who they were. I saw that as well on the Herald site and thought to myself what the feck has that got to do with him signing a short contract with Argyle. Supose she might be his personal trainer........
i just read in the Erald that Rooney broke Lyndie's glasses on Saturday. What a thug. You can't go around head butting a scouser Lyndie..........
I have a similar claim to fame actually. Ralph McTell spilt my pint in the Polgooth Inn one Friday music night. He said “oh I’m terribly sorry” and I said “It’s perfectly alright Ralph, don’t you worry”. Ah, the memories.
It may have been captured I'm not sure. I had to look up who Ralph McTell is/was but as soon as I saw Streets of London I knew. My claim to fame with somebody called Ralph was meeting Mr Harris in a bar in Gib and me and staff talking him into doing "a turn" for the troops the next day. I don't like to talk about that these days given how things turned out. I'll just say that all of the Wrens were over 18.
My mate Ralph had a house just down in the road in London Apprentice. The pub would have been his local. The Polgooth Inn was a proper pub then: a stone-flagged public bar and carpeted lounge. It’s a single bar eatery now but still does music outdoors in the summer. My mates and I would go down there occasionally on a Sunday lunchtime for a pint and darts. At around 1pm, the door would open and an older middle aged lady would come in with her miniature pony. Nothing would be said and the barman would solemnly pull half a pint into a large bowl which would be put on the flags for the pony to drink. They’d then leave. Is it just the country or just Cornwall?
