To be fair, all but a handful on Charlton social media cottoned on mid July that the owners were potless / not spending. The taps were turned off after Docherty on 7 July - at which point we started to hear the familiar leaks from within the club about having to sell before we could buy. A classic con after the ST money had been trousered. Birmingham fielded Iwata, Dykes & Stansfield in attacking positions today, along with 4 other internationals . Alfie May came off their bench to replace Stansfield. We persisted with a 33 year old (Godden) who couldn’t hit a cow’s arse with a banjo, and replaced him with a Birmingham reject who can only manage 20 min cameos. Nobody expects us to do a Birmingham, but equally nobody is fooled that these latest owners have spent two bob.

One of the 2-3 main problems as things stand is that “words have not been matched by actions” as far as the investors & SMT are concerned, and after 8 games this season the fans can see this v clearly. James Rodwell told Charlton TV that a promotion challenge was the bare minimum requirement this season, and we may still get one, but IMO the signs are not promising. We are certainly not strong contenders to go up, and the bookies odds confirm this . So the question is , why ? This is where slippery Charlie Methven plays a part - ramping up fan’s expectations over the Summer, and once again not delivering on his part of the bargain (a budget to deliver promotion). It doesn’t matter a fig to say we have one of the best budgets in this league, when 80% plus of the clubs are smaller than you anyway - Stevenage being a topical example. Once again we have got a very average squad of odds & sods that a struggling manager is trying to do something with. We all know how this story ends ….
It's the same old story. Just as Season tickets come out we are given a load of false promises which are not acted on. What progressive Club sells its top scorer and best midfielder and then brings in a raft of Jones mates? This Club has been taking the piss out of good loyal supporters for years. Yet people like me keep falling for it. I have now got an enforced break from Charlton due to my operation tomorrow and it couldn't have come at a better time.
