The biggest problem with Banega is getting a work permit. He didn't play in 2010 for Argentina having been overlooked by Maradona and has only played in 2 of the last 5 competitive matches in 2011. No doubting his ability and being relatively young would fit with FSG policy. Price could be an issue - he's quality and to buy in January often comes at a premium. Valencia would need to be pursuaded to sell as well, which could be a problem. Then he'd have to acclimatize to English football. Overall then, I'm not sure if January would be the best time to bring him in, and it wouldn't exactly be a vote of confidence in the players we have at the club, particularly Spearing and Henderson, both of whom would look naturally fill the void left by Lucas...
Yan M'Vila or Banega for me, I would be happy with either but Banega prob has more to his game and has proved himself in a top league
There's a bit of talk about a guy called Leroy Fer, who plays in a similar role for FC Twente. Big physical player, so a bit different to Lucas. Having spent big on Henderson I can't see us spending so much on another young midfielder. Seydou Keita or Lassana Diarra would be more realistic and available options, but when Gerrard gets back I'd imagine he would adapt to a deeper role anyway.

We won't get anyone I reckon. Henderson is starting to look more assured, Spearing can do a job, Stevie will be back soon and Jonjo has been recalled.
I think we were getting a midfielder anyway, and Jonjo will likely go back on loan when we bring a replacement in, as he's not exactly a like for like substitute for Lucas
Yeh I don't want to replace Lucas either, but Banega would be replacing Meireles and Gerrard isn't exactly trustworthy these days. We're an injury away from looking very light. He will be snapped up by someone soon - may as well be us.
Benga would never come, and his asking price would be 20-30, no chance if we also want a new striker and winger. Someone like Keita could come to around 16 mil and is decent. Agger can also play there with Skrtel and Coates/Carragher behind him.
