At my work they only serve Halal meat in the canteen. That's disgraceful. There should be a choice. I think the traditional British way of animal slaughter is far more humane than the Halal method and I find it shocking that non Muslims at work are forced to eat Halal meat if they eat in the canteen. There should be other options on the menu. Nothing against having Halal on the menu, I just think it's crueler than our method so would rather have a choice. Positive discrimination rains supreme.

There isn't a definite answer (that I can find) as to which way incurs more suffering.

 

This, we try way to hard to please religions cause we're scared of what they could do against us (this isn't just against muslims but religion in general), in your case to get halal you should have to ask, not the other way around.

 

On the halal thing - although I think their should be two options - if you're losing money from it, in a recession, and most of your workforce are muslims, it makes a lot of sense to just use halal as it's not gonna offend many, is it?

 

Where I work it is only the minority that are from Black Minority Ethnic backgrounds, Inc. Muslims - that's why there should be the option of Halal I think. But it shouldn't be the only choice I think personally.

 

As an ex-chef I can tell you why.

Using two types of meat (halal and non-halal) doubles costs not just in the purchase of the meat but also in the costs of cooking it and preparing it.

All chefs abhor wastage and try to keep the rate of wastage below 1%.

Twice ther wastage if using two meat choices. Seeing that the meats taste the same irrespective of slaugher methods the obvious choice is to select the one meat acceptable to all and that's halal.

 

If there's only a few of them, let them bring their own bait in. Sorted.

 

There are people that would refuse Halal meat. Like there are people that would refuse non-Halal meat.

I agree that food wastage is criminal at times in this country. But if they bought 95% traditional British slaughtered meat and 5% Halal then there'd be enough to keep all happy, and without much cost differential.

 

Why refuse halal? If they bought two different meats in they'd have to prepare, cook and serve them separately, and pay over the odds for the Halal due to lack of bulk.

To me all meat is disgusting, whatever its origin. However, this sort of thing just hastens the day when a fascist party comes to power. Because we are terrified of upsetting people's finer feelings and implementing even moderate measures aimed at ensuring a measure of humanity, we will be faced with truly extreme measures. All hail the multi-cultural society!

 

Any method of killing is inhumane.

 

To me whilst I respect the opinions of others in regards to killing and eating meat, seeing as I have family members who are vegetarian. I see humans killing animals for food perfectly fine in the sense we don't stop lions from eating antelope by saying its morally wrong for them to kill. Its all a case of the food chain and what ever is below us is their to be eaten IMO.
