'I'll stick with this approach' - Walter Hull City boss Tim Walter told BBC Radio Humberside: "That's football and it's human that you make mistakes. "We played a good, courageous game. We were very brave and kept going until the end. I'm proud of my boys. "The team was more fluid and more creative but we just didn't have the finishing touch. We had 20 or 30 crosses but they weren't good. "You can only learn from mistakes. I told the boys that they have to stay courageous. If we change then we can't improve. "I'll stick with this approach 100%. That is how I have been successful. I'm very convinced of my game and my boys." Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder told BBC Radio Sheffield: "I'm delighted with it but I didn't think it was a great performance. "We'll play better and we have played better this season. When they gave us so many chances to counter and add to our lead in the first half we didn't make the most of it. "The shape of the team was good at the end. We never really gave them any clear opportunities and I thought our two centre halves were outstanding. "Love a Friday night away win. We can get our head on the pillow tonight and enjoy our weekend."
Absolutely this, 100%. Belloumi must have had the ball twice in that first half. The left is our only consistent outlet, still. Not sure why Giles is getting slated as he's the only one capable of getting the ball forward. Macca is actually trying to do the job required but the quality part is lacking; that pass that sets us off after he's moved. Jones is still playing last season's system. Coyle does well when he gets forward, but with the ball, deep, he's not setting anything off for us either. He's also still playing last season's system. What we're seeing right now in defence is the reality of what our defence is. We're still operating with a largely League 1 back line. Rosenior managed to overprotect it but it cost us heavily in attack and creating chances. We took the sting out of everything all the time and it relied entirely on waiting for something special from one of a few special players who have since gone to a league above for a lot of money. Fast forward to now, where they're all expected to play football and move like midfielders... Except they're struggling with it, because they're 'limited defenders'. They're going from a system that was about simple passes and ball retention and about not conceding goals. It played to their strengths. Now they're being asked to contribute more but it's falling down because they're struggling to do so. Zambrano helped ease this pressure really well a couple of weeks ago. Burns tonight, did nothing of the sort unfortunately. Tonight we were the architects of our own downfall again. I agree the corners need sorting as they've been ****e, consistently. As for judging the system, right now we're not seeing it. These rotations and movements aren't really happening at all, but this is down to getting used to the new philosophy and the number of new players we've brought in as well, 4 of which still haven't featured yet, 2 of which got their first hour tonight and others of which have had only 2 to 4 games for us at this point. The amount of changes we've made all at once are a recipe for disaster, but all it needs is time and patience to start to see it working. This isn't Walterball... We're seeing brief glimpses of it, but we look absolutely nothing like his previous teams at the moment. Two problems, we don't move often enough, we play too safe. When someone does move progressively, the pass doesn't often come, so we just end up out of shape and with more pressure on the ball carrier, who then plays the sideways or backwards pass because that's what they're used to. Same problems as last season so far, and it starts at the back. The other issue is the lack of chemistry when we do get the ball forward quickly and successfully, but with the sheer number of new entries into the club, they should come naturally with more time. Personally I don't see any need to piss pants quite yet. It's frustrating to watch because we shoot ourselves in the foot every game, but it should start to click.
I just don't see the point in giving TW more time. We can still have a good season and I think we will but this style just isn't going to work. The annoying thing about tonight is the Sheff Utd really weren't great. It's been clear for a while that he's not up to it but there's been a barrage of excuses which was always going to stop once the window closed.
I stopped reading this the second I saw the build up play previously wasn't a problem. It was THE problem.
Someone at the HDM not being supportive of City? Surely not! No comments about brave Hull ( City) like there are when FC get mauled?
I blame acun for us being ****e....instead of paying loads of brass out on players ...shell a bit out on a proven championship manager....... Shota.....no experience in England at all Rosenior....nice guy and ex city player but no experience at this level Big tim....as above ( apart from ex city player)..... At least allam got it right with bruce.,.
Walter politely told him to **** off asking the same question over and over again and he's taken his bat and ball home
Agree, nothing special. They were pretty pedestrian, but the galling thing is that we never looked like hurting them and they didn't have to get out of third gear to fend us off...If they're the benchmark to aspire to, then its a poor league...It's no compensation for us but on the evidence of tonight they'll have better teams than us to contend with.
Based on what the referee had blown up for earlier, I thought it should have been a foul on Millar by Moore. Then the ball went to Brooks then the ball from Brooks to the scorer McCallum. Is that classed as setting up?
One of the most frustrating things for me is that players went off the pitch not even looking like they broke a sweat. That's just not right. Hardly any of them looked like they had a work out. Only Coyle again had that look about him. He really is the only one right now that looks like he gives a ****. Massively frustrating.
This isn’t necessarily true. On several occasions, we managed to build up successfully from the back and beat the opposition’s press according to Walter’s principles but the final ball was dogshit almost every time and when the final ball was decent, the finish was dogshit. In the first half, Bedia ran with the ball and could’ve played in Belloumi 1-on-1 with their keeper and in another passage of play Mehlem ran with the ball on the break and we were 4v3; had his pick of Kamara, Bedia and Belloumi to play through on goal but took an extra touch like a dickhead and lost the ball. There were more than enough chances for us to score tonight but the final pass or finish was atrocious.
Some of you must be on a wind up! It’s been 5 games ffs!! This is the first game he’s had all these players!
You can call it 5 games all you want. I'm not ignoring the **** pre season with these **** tactics that even back then I was concerned about.
Nah it really wasn't. It was an easy target for simplistic people but we were very good at it. Our problem was further up, and it still is now. Like Tim says, all these crosses and all these openings where you'd think one or two should become serious chances but they never do. He's absolutely right, but the thing that worries me is that he implies it'll just click in time if we carry on and believe. It never does. We believed and hoped all last season and if anything we got worse at creating chances despite other parts of our play getting better. Makes me wonder whether he knows much about our recent history or if he thinks it's all irrelevant. I'm beyond sick of seeing us get into good positions 10 times a game but not create a chance, it's a problem that predates him by a long time and it needs serious attention, not just leaving to sort itself out.
At points I wonder care if someone just let loose a shot. Yes we can call a wasted or whatever but, unless you twist you have no ****ing clue what might happen. You might get another Coyle special. And right now it's looking like worldies are the only things we can create. So shoot!
And this time I stopped reading after 'simplistic people'... Coming from the person that was insistent 'tempo' was just a buzz word last season and the pace of our build up wasn't causing us problems higher up the pitch. When attacking in the final third, would you rather 3 vs 3 with the defenders facing their own goal, backtracking, or 10 vs 10 with the defenders in position and ready for anything?
