Great performance last night by the sounds of it. Anyone have a link to highlights by any chance?

Anyway with such a convincing and dominating victory, is this the return of the 4-5-1 system we used predominantly last season? I like the fact that it will mean more playing time for Becchio and push Howson further up the pitch.

But what about the likes of Mccormack? He wouldn't fit onto the left due to the balance of Pugh/White, and Snoddy is concrete for the right. As last night (and last season) shows, Howson must stay in that advanced position to get the best out of him.

    Thoughts? MOT

Cheese, I tend to the same view as one or two others. 451 sounds a grim & negative formation. If you assume Clayton & Brown take the holding role in the centre, Pugh/White & Snoddy play out wide, & Howson gets up to support Becchio, 4-2-3-1 looks a lot more attack minded. I know it was only Forest, & I know one swallow a summer doth not make but to listen to it, it just sounded as though we were creating so many more chances than we've done in recent matches, albeit against poor opposition.

I think the 'Wall, although struggling at the moment despite winning last night, will provide much stiffer opposition. Saturday will be full of emotion. But I think we'll just about have enough to sneak home. I'll take another 4-0 if we can get it, but 1 or 2-0 I think is more likely.

4-2-3-1 has Becchio, Howson and Snoddy all in their best positions, and allows Clayton to run things from midfield knowing he has a partner to back him up defensively. Not that I think we should completely abandon 4-4-2, but it's great to be able to freshen things up and change our play to suit the game and I think 4-2-3-1 should be our default formation.

Like all of that Simon. As a thought, should Howson fracture an eyelash & be off for a couple of games, who'd take his role, McC., Keogh, or Nunez? Same question about Becchio? I think Nunez would replace Howson & McC. would replace Becchio should either not be available.

I'm not sure it's as simple as just replacing players in the formation, because if Becchio were to get injured I'm not sure the formation would really work as well. But I agree that if Jonny were to injure himself Nunez would be the most natural replacement. I think at some point if we were trying yo make the formation even more fluid and unpredictable we should possibly try Pugh next to Clayton in CM, with White at LB and Ross at LW. Ross would cut in onto his right foot for a lot of the game and we'd have Pugh & White to fill the space on the left.

keogh would have to be becchios replacement in a 4231. much more physical presence then ross which is vital to hold the ball up

A midfield 5 is always more flexible. Look at England Germany from the World cup last year, they tore us apart cause we were so rigid. With a midfield 5, Clayton, Howson, Snodgrass can all get involved and attack more. They are our best players. McCormack's a good striker and I still think he could play upfront as a lone striker (as long as we don't play the long ball) or on the left. We have the squad to mix it up and change to a 4-4-2 or 4-5-1 when necessary. Some games at home when we play a team that will park the bus, a midfield 5 would allow us to find more space. Whereas a 4-4-2 can be so rigid.

I prefer a midfield 5 much, much more.

I notice Josh-LUFC has been absent since this 'negative' formation helped us win 4-0 away from home. <whistle>

been on holiday, just got back and nice to see a good 4-0 win but i still think 4-4-2 is more adaptable and generally a better formation

Hope it was a good holiday. Then again, I'd probably class one of your working days in Brisbane as a good holiday...

Don't tell me Josh, it was a tough gig, but someone has to do it. Didn't go diving in Cairns when I went their a few years ago, but did wander round Daintree Forest. Not the ugliest part of the world is it? Just think, they got our miscreants & places like Daintree Forest, we got Kylie, Rolf Harris, & exported Fosters. Somehow I think they got the better end of the bargain!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mid 2000. I'd just finished 3 years in Islamabad & took the slow plane home via Cairns, Brisbane, Sydney etc through Bangkok & Chang Mai & home. It was hard, but I felt the need to save others from such a tortuous experience!!!
