Tbh I have no idea how it would work, when also trying to factor in how Martin likes to play. He’s not going to completely abandon it so needs to tweak it, and the only way I can think of is to have an extra body at the back to provide an option for the pass, but that doesn’t help with attacking at all. It’s annoying that we’ve had a relatively easy start and blown it because Martin has learnt that his style isn’t going to work. Rather we learnt that before having played Forest at home and Brentford away. We are going to need something like 35 points to survive, very hard to see how we get anything close to that atm
With our tactics of dicking around the back……we will always give cheap goals away. So far in this league RM is very much so tactically inept.
RM has got a fortnight to work his magic and create a winning side again United, but who wants to do the thread for that? It could be the start of a long run of good results! I can dream can't I?
There is a problem with the defence, as much as I don't like keeper captains give Ramsdale the band and use his experience to stop the fanying about from the back.
I'd like to think that Ramsdale would use his experience even without being made captain. And besides, if we want to give the armband to someone who has experience at the very highest level, we have a stronger candidate than that (when he's on the pitch).
He was always going to pick the play-off team to start off with, they have earned their chance but I think that we will see the new players integrated more and more. The disappointing thing for me has been the way that the defence has struggled with the passing out from the back, they have been doing it for a year and it seems that went straight back to square one this season like they were total noobs at it.
Really? The PL is a massive step up & our passing out from the back didn’t work last year, even if we got away with it, most of the time. It was never going to work this year.
Some of you are ridiculous. Will Russell make the step up? He's had a few games in charge, but things can change. Nobody knows. Should we get rid of the man who got us promoted and has given a morale boost to the whole squad because he hasn't got any points in his first three PL games as manager? No. Give the man some time and a fair chance to get an understanding of the league. Talk of getting rid of the manager shouldn't be happening already. If we're in a doom and gloom position come mid October then I'd understand a bit more. But for now, let him try and learn. Focus your negative energy on something else because it's unwanted around St Mary's. Get a grip.
I think that it's worse with 5 at the back, sometimes the players pass to each other when they are too close together leading to being caught in possession.
So for us who can see our set up and team selection choices ? and yes are we are not qualified coaches but can see what will happen next? But not allowed to call out bullshit tactics? ……get a grip young man.
Depends on the system I guess. But in this one where more threat and creativity is needed from midfield I struggle to see how it works with him and Smallbone. Most of last season there were three attacking players ahead of the three in midfield.
You can see what will happen next? Please, englighten me. I for one, believe people can change tactics... If he doesn't then fair enough. But it's way too early to talk about sacking him yet. There are so many fickle Saints fans unfortunately.
I'd like to see Dibling in the Stu Armstrong position and Fernandes as the box to box 8 (or Big Les). Tyler has that ability to transition play like Stuey did with his direct running with the ball.
In all fairness many people feel we got promoted in spite of his tactics, not because of them, and said so all of last season. So to see those same tactics failing isn’t a surprise. Hopefully the new signings can bed in and we see a different team after the break. If the midfield isn’t Les/Downes/Fernandes I might cry
