No but if you drive two cars you pay two sets of road tax. Hence per car. You said you pay car tax already so shouldn't have to for additional vehicles (like a bike). Evs create zero emissions and are beginning to get charged. Might as well charge bikes too since we have a 20 billion pound black hole in our finances
To be fair, cyclists arent really that bad even though i drive in London a lot. They are normally pretty good i find. Its the dickhead mopeds and hordes of deliveroo uber eat moped drivers who are the ****s and weave in and out and cut you up who are dangerous
It's not just an emissions tax, as there is an additional rate for new cars over a certain value. I don't see how brand new cars emit less as they get older? Made up stealth tax basically.
You should see me coming as I have blinking front and rear lights on my road and mountain bike. Also some of my Lycra is spectacular colours. Helmets are cheap and should be mandatory, fully agree with that. Just a controversial point and not to cause an argument with you btw. Cyclists are responsible for their own welfare, and in the Highway Code it states they should take a central position in the lane to ensure they are seen/safe. f

Yeah that's exactly what it is. It's nothing like a road tax. So the Govt called it an emissions tax, which largely hit people with older more polluting cars Then they brought out EVs and the Treasury thought, hang on we won't get any tax from them so better change the rules And like you say, an increased rate for more expensive cars.
Ironically, I actually found it safer cycling in London that I do in the country. In the City most traffic is doing about 10mph average and a lot of the time it's at a standstill. So it's actually quicker and more efficient on a bike. In the sticks, it's either narrow country lanes where people drive like ****ing nobends, or fast single carriage A roads which are full of bends, dips and potholes. Probably the most dangerous types of roads in the UK for both cyclists and drivers.

Cyclists are also allowed to ride two abreast, which actually makes it safer for cars to pass, as the distance (not the gap) they need to safely pass is reduced.
Not two sets of emissions. If i as a single person owned 3 cars and wanted to drive all 3 in a single year, i pay full car tax on all 3 cars even though i can only physically drive 1 at a time. I dont get to pro rata it because even though its impossible for me to produce 3 cars worth of emissions (unless i leave them all running), i would be paying 3 sets worth of car tax
I've no problem with cyclists taking up a central position, as I said previously, I don't actually have an issue with cyclists, they've never bothered me, I work around them and guage them as entitled to the width of a car. I'm more concerned I don't want to hit them, so I'd rather take my time than not - the only pressure I get will be from those behind me, but at my age you just learn to ignore them and go when safe to do so. I still stand by what I said on lycra though, it's not suitable attire for the road at the speeds you can get up. It's as bad as a moped rider taking to the road without jeans and a jacket.
Lycra/lightweight cycle wear has dual use. First is to not have flappy things creating drag, secondly the material helps regulate temperature/wick away sweat when putting in loads of effort. but yeah, if you fall off at 20/30mph then there is some gravel rash. but I look good in it, accept the risk. Helmet is a must even if out cycling alongside the kids. They have lights even on the pavement.
Middle aged men with beer bellies definitely don't. I do like a lycra clad woman's arse though. Stuck behind one often enough
