I’ll wait until he’s signed and in photos with a Saints shirt on before getting too excited. Feels like bigger clubs who could offer higher wages, and who aren’t likely to get relegated will see that price, swoop in and gazump us.
Surprised we've sold him to you guys permanently, as I was under the impression it would be a straight loan or loan with an option to buy. I always assumed Arsenal would demand a high fee for Ramsdale, so selling him for £18m up front + £7m in add-ons means we either sell him for a £6m loss (if add-ons aren't met) or, if add-ons are met, we virtually break even (we bought him for £24m in 2021). It's not a great deal financially from Arsenal's perspective. But there's clearly more to factor in than just finances. You can argue he's been a bit hard done by in the way that he was dropped for Raya, but I think time has proven it was right to replace him (even if I still don't agree with how we went about it). Honestly though, I think this is a quality signing for you guys, especially for that price. I don't mean this in a disrespectful way, but I was convinced he'd have gotten a move to a 'better' team than Southampton, given how well he'd performed for us for 2 years. He was an integral part of a side that was fighting for Champions League places to then fighting for the Premier League title, and he's an England international as well. Even though on occasion he didn't quite cover himself in glory for us, he equally pulled off some magnificent saves at times and displayed tremendous reflex skills. I'll always remember his heroics against Liverpool at Anfield and Spurs away in the 2022/23 season, where he was under siege at times, yet rose to the occasion and rescued us points. I think that experience he had with us will help you guys. I wish him and you guys all the best (except when you play us of course). Take care of him .
Given we play on the last day of the season this creates the potential scenario of Ramsdale denying you the title!
All the talk we saw was that Arsenal really wanted a permanent sale rather than a loan. And that if there was to be a loan it would have to be an obligation which was always going to be tough with the threat of relegation As to the finances. If you signed him for 24m in 2021 on a 5 year deal then I think that means he is in your accounts at 9.6m. So Arsenal technically get a profit this year for PSR calculations. Albeit not a big one. But that circa 8m only needs to count against a portion of any future fees for the calculation purposes. So another 24m signing on a 5 year deal is another 4.8m off which still leaves “money” left over. It’s weird And the other finances at play is getting his wages off your books. Although I struggle to believe we are matching his arsenal terms. I don’t see how we could be
Still a premier league loan slot available as well. Not that there are necessarily that many players we can use it on. And presumably nothing to do with our thinking
Just seen it's at St. Mary's as well for ****'s sake . It's soooo over for us. Jokes aside, not convinced we've done enough to win or come as close to the title as last year anyway. It's been a pretty underwhelming transfer window. And with Ramsdale going, it means we're going to sign Joan Garcia (another goalkeeper) from Espanyol. That'll be the 3rd goalkeeper we've signed this Summer....no money spent on an attacker though
I'm a little surprised by a permanent deal but on reflection I don't know if his wages are that ridiculous. It sounds like they aren't that different to what JWP was on and based on his career to date he's a class above any other player we have.
You're not the only one mate. I was convinced the priority would be at least one forward this window. Criminal that we've not signed one, especially with Nketiah's move to Palace and Jesus's injury problems. Some journalists were saying Toney met with Arteta and Edu before the Euros and it was described as a 'car crash of a meeting'. Clearly we weren't too keen on his character for whatever reason. I did think we'd target any of Sesko, Gyokeres, Vlahovic, Joao Pedro or Osimhen. But looks like we're getting none of them and will roll the dice with what we have.
