Not sure if there's different rules by region in France, some areas were free of them, others it seemed you were constantly trying to get out there way.

No, you pay based on emissions. There's no such thing as road tax

Currently EV's are £0 but they are going to change that because Govt will cream you wherever you can.

    I've got 1 bike

I don't actually cycle on roads much at all, only to connect off road trails that I ride.

Generally, roads are really dangerous for cyclists, a lot of it is bad design and lack of cycle paths and a lot of it is ****ty attitudes towards cyclists. It's cliched, but most people who've posted about it on here fall into it, the idea that cyclists are in the way, don't stop at red lights, weave in and out are lycra clad warriors etc etc. So people drive like dickheads around them, get impatient and try to get past them as quickly as possible and put people in danger. Those same people are somebody's son or daughter and if it was that driver's son or daughter, they would have a completely different attitude about it.

As mentioned, Peej summed it up at the beginning, drivers give horse riders loads of room, time and space to pass safely. But something in their brains seems to switch to anger mode if it's a cyclist.

I've always respected cyclists on the road, so that's a bit of a generalisation and maybe demonstrating also the broader attitude of cyclists.

Why we are making comparisons though, why is it if I ride a motorbike, I have to wear a crash helmet, if I drive a car or am a passaenger I have to wear a seat belt, yet no such laws exist towards cyclists for helmets only recommendations, I don't even think clothing recommendations for cyclists even exists.

Do I consider lycra appropriate wear for a day to day cyclist, non sporting event, no - I wouldn't get on a motorbike in just a t shirt (some might), so why do cyclists wear lycra. Especially when you consider for every motorist killed around 25 cyclists will be killed, that's just in GB alone.

We are absolutely obsessed with safety in this country except when it comes to cyclists, in that mode of transport, we just blame everyone else. Cyclists also have a responsibility towards their own welfare and are often lacking in it.

It is a generalisation, but then so is saying cyclists often lack responsibility towards their own safety. What I will say though, is that I guarantee you for every trip a cyclist makes, they'll have at least one dangerous encounter with a driver. So from a cyclist perspective it's every time they use the roads.

I don't know why any cyclist would take to the roads without using a helmet (or off road) And I think it should be made law to wear one.

I also agree that some cyclists show disregard for other road users and the rules of the road. So I guess you get dickhead drivers and dickhead cyclists.

The dickhead cyclists are largely just putting themselves in danger, whereas the dickhead drivers are putting cyclists in danger.

You have a point and you're missing a point. There are a lot of dickhead cyclists that cause disruption and ignore the rules and this drives impatience and makes drivers angry with them.
It's a 2 way thing and both need to be patient, I am but don't agree that they should be on the road, especially in groups which is a common thing around here.

    Yeah I just said that

I get it, the group thing is annoying. Although they have the right to do it.

If I'm on a road in a group when I'm up on Dartmoor, we just shout 'car' and then all pull over and let the car pass. It's just easier for everybody.

and lycra is that really appropriate for our roads, if you want to wear that shhite they should be made to go to an athletics track or something, where we can have a first aider on hand with a little blue light on their head, looking out for these twats wonderful cyclists.

anyway, don't even know why I got into this discussion as I don't really care, just know I wouldn't ride a bike on the road myself, probably why I'm still alive.

lol I think the Lycra is probably the least of the issues here

but I think the roadies wear it so that they can shave 0.0004 of a second of off their times

I got hit by a 11.5 ton delivery truck once. Sparko and woke up in the road with my bike folded in half.

That accident though, was entirely my fault.

I think you've a vague idea where I live but, behind my house is a fairly steep road leading up to places on Gower etc..

It's a wide tree lined avenue, loads of space, with grass verges behind the footpath to people's properties. The council decided that they were building a cycle path on this road, despite the fact it is wide enough to accommodate cyclists and vehicles comfortably

So, they chopped down a load of mature trees, narrowed the road, took up half the footpath, and took ****ing ages to build this cycle path both sides.

Which cyclist clad in lycra refuse to use because they're got all the gear, so they are professional and that, it's beneath them. Massive waste of money, was never needed.

It's fine down hill as the cyclist are quicker than the cars, (it's 20mph) but why the **** they can't use the uphill one, for their own safety at least, is beyond me.

Other than so they can complain about motorists.

This road then hits a narrower road across a common with no footpath at all and this definitely needs a cycle path, 100%. The council haven't done that though, no sir.
