Clough did like a bung, though. Pissed as a newt, too. I really dislike the word spiv in football, as it only ever seems to get applied to those of a certain background.
Howard Webb announced an hour ago that the allegiances of match officials would be made public. This was due to the whole saga between Stuart Attwell and Forest, who brought his integrity into question. The PGMOL have now said that this won't happen, presumably after getting lots of angry messages from said refs.
If wishes were horses, beggars would ride is an old Scottish proverb iirc , meaning if wishing could make things happen, then even the most destitute people would have everything they want , think this could sum up Anges approach to the young squad that he's assembling, since joining the average age of purchases is just over 21
Rip Sven Germany 1-5 England in Munich the highlight of his England career for me. A real shame England didn’t do better in major tournaments under him
A gentleman and a delight to be around, by all accounts. But his legacy on these shores will be singularly wasting the so called 'Golden Generation', largely because he couldn't or didn't want to see that the answer to the "Gerrard or Lampard?" question was "Scholes and Carrick".
Spot on. Scholes and Carrick played together at club level. Carrick’s skills were suited to international football. Modern day formations and subs rules would have helped him out as Gerrard or Lampard could have played in the same midfield and the odd man out could have made cameo appearances off the bench when required. It might have been harder to shoehorn Beckham into that midfield. The 2006 England team could have won the World Cup with the right selections, no injuries and a strong following wind.
There was also the weird obsession with Owen Hargreaves as the go-to at DM despite the fact that he is made of flotsam. Probably to do with the fact that he played (occasionally) for Bayern, which was considered 'exotic'. Carrick was simply the better player even without bringing flotsam into the discussion.
Although it should be pointed out that during Sven’s tenure, Scholes and Carrick would not have been teammates at club level
You're right. Sven's mistake was setting the precedent that Lampard and Gerrard had to play together, come what may. Future managers were either too scared or too clueless to change that precedent. His England team were Galacticos whose parts were greater than the sum of their whole.
Just watched the beebs show about MOTD @60. And hats off for the very quick edit to remove Jenas from the show.
Apologies if covered elsewhere but..... I see we play Coventry away in the LC 2 days after the Goons. WTAF!! 2nd string team to go to the Midlands then! Yes, I know that we would not be playing a full first 11 in that game, but unless we have already given up hope of progressing in a cup we could actually win, then I'm sure that a fair few would have featured at least in part. We have focused on the repetitive injury crisis and general lack of stamina / fitness and this fixture comes along 48 hours after one of the most stressful games in any season. ****ing ridiculous! (Personal opinion, of course! )
Very busy period after the international break- think it’s 4 games in 11 days. We knew it was coming though. The squad depth and quality will be tested.
