I was talking to my best mate last night who’s a mag and we were talking about the gulf between the champ and PL. I was talking about the step up in full backs especially that Clarke will be facing because at this level they seem to be very hitty miss and can normally either defend or attack, but never both. Full backs in the PL all seem great defensively, fast, strong etc. One of the things I got onto is the physicality and I mentioned Arsenal. Not only are they arguably playing the best football in the league but their squad is filled with monsters. They can do absolutely everything and they’ve had a few disappointing seasons in Europe and the domestic cups imo. It’s all good pushing City all the way in the league but if you’re going to end the season without a trophy it’s meaningless.

Saliba 6’4, Gabriel 6’4, Rice 6’2, Havertz 6’3, White 6’1. Soon to have Calafiori in there at 6’3.

Imagine us trying to defend set pieces against that?

They are a ridiculous side mate. Saliba for me is incredible, he just seems to be strolling about in his bare feet, then just bursts into life when needed, incredible athlete.

It is a gulf. When you look at teams going up and who they’d sign they not get near top teams.

Like you say it ain’t just ability. Speed, strength, mentality. The gap is in all of it.

Arsenal brought Trossard off the bench is an example. He would walk into any side outside the top 4. He’d be the best player at the club in 10-12 of the Prem.

Thing is, this goes for a load of players. For me you have to build a team that’s in harmony to go up and stay up. A team that play off each other, cos you cannot go up and compete man for man.

I think Arsenal will do it this year..They have bought well and play incredible football at times. Also, when not playing great ( as in the Villa game) they are finding a way to win

Aye that’s it mate. You’d think something has to be done sooner or later it’s becoming ridiculous. Look at Chelsea’s bench the other day, absolutely absurd. Felix, Nkunku and Neto. You could argue those 3 are a top 4 front 3.

Even West Ham’s bench was daft. Alvarez, Ward Prowse, Fullkrug, Todibo, Summerville..

Strengthens the squad for sure, but i dont think any are stand outs

Still think theyll have the strongest squad by the end of the window, their starting line up will be weaker than it was but thats normal for recently relegated teams

I agree, 3 good players, none are proper eye openers.

Hannibal was alright at Brum
Sarmiento was alright at Ipswich
Anthony was alright at Leeds

I

I know it’s Keith but the fact he’s reported it as advanced talks makes me confident. He would be all over it like a fly on **** if it had fell through anarl <laugh>
His wife has just had a baby Tbf, he’s more than likely not working

I hope so. Their fans are unbearable on social media mind but I’d like to see them win it, Arteta is doing a brilliant job but as I say without trophies it means nout. Klopps Liverpool from a few years ago and now this arsenal team would wipe the floor with most PL winning teams before 2017. Now they’re just second best to Peps machine

Hell of a job to get established.

Bizarrely, it might be the Netflix show that helps us. The profile from that is crazy.

Massive fan of Merino. To be that tall and rakey but have that control is mental.

He be great for them.

Aye I was scared Newcastle were going to sign him when they had him on loan a few years ago, thankfully big Mike was in charge at the time and they rejected the chance to do so

They did sign him mate. Then they sold him on.

He was very young and he developed quickly, was more he wasn’t ready for PL physically at time.

Mendy and his advisors should have got something in writing and didn’t.

I love that the lad wants to play for us but think it’s a bit **** of him doing what he’s doing. Imagine if Clarke had done this to us at the start of this season, saying we’d promised we’d accept a premier league offer etc

The flip side is that the club should have something in the contract banning him from discussing it on social media. "If it's not written in his contract, then it's fair game" seems to be the mantra on here but I think there's much more nuance than that.

This move was clearly all but signed, hence him "choosing" us. Once a decision like that is made, your head and heart have gone too. There's no going back.

The new owners have come in and pulled the plug, which of course they're entitled to do legally, but I don't think it's a good look. Have a chat and try to persuade him for sure, but keeping him against his will seems like poor form to me.

I still hope we get him through the door this week. I've a feeling he'll work himself into the ground for us.
