What makes you think I was referring to you with that? That was a general comment to illustrate the contrast between the apprehension that some show in the build-up to a match, and the dismissive nature of the response to a win. It wasn't about any individuals, rather an observation of the quirky attitudes of fans as a whole - the impression you get reading stuff without necessarily focussing on one individual. I was thinking of you (amongst others) with the "only" thing though. It's perfectly obvious that some teams are better than others, but none deserve the "only" label, and no win should be dismissed in that fashion. Imagine if Slot had said "Itsh ok boysh, itsh only Ipshwich". We don't expect the team to take them lightly, so why should we? In fact he has already said that with all due respect to the teams we've played, they're not top six contenders and we still have to improve - so he's well aware of the situation.
Dare I suggest this but perhaps tackle those who are making out this was anything but an expected win. We are not day zero klopp here. There's no dejan lovern or alberto morenos running about here. Slot knows we have to improve at least though.
I've criticised some of his media comments so far so I suppose it's only fair that I offer praise too... ... excellent response
I'd be shocked if trent didn't already know he would be subbed pregame. No player looked pleased to come off but they will all bloody well get used to him being in charge and that is that. If trent wants to do one then he can do one. The door is there and he's ran his contract to that point himself. Slot is in charge and that is that.
I repeat, it was just a general comment about all of us fans as a body. We have those who worry about a game beforehand, thinking it's a banana skin, and then after a win we hear it was routine and expected. I wasn't "tackling" anyone in particular, just pointing out the wide range of conflicting opinions we get. The "only" thing was specific, because I think any PL team can cause an upset (and even some from lower tiers), it's happened often enough - and no win should be dismissed as routine based purely on the opposition. We can, of course, warn against reading too much into a win against "lower" opposition, but as I said Slot has already said he's aware that there will be stronger tests. Anyway, I'm not going to spend all day going round the houses with this and I want to move on. I know you've said that we need to banish the fear of 12.30 starts, and I agree with that. Klopp was driven by emotion, and that got to him and probably bled down into the team a bit. Slot needs to engender a belief that we just deal with whatever we get and not let stuff like that worry us, and it does seem like he's taking that attitude. So far, I'm happy with the things he says and the attitude he shows, it just remains to be seen if his tactics are good enough for us to mount a serious challenge against sterner opposition.
I was reasonably satisfied with yesterday's win. Carragher said it best when he said we needed more wins like this last season. Because of our high risk strategy last season, even some of the games we won comfortably relied on Alisson/Kelleher and VVD's abilities 1v1 at crucial moments. We never seriously looked like dropping points yesterday. But Slot go it right as well when he said that Ipswich and Brentford aren't exactly expected to finish in the top 6. The Gravenberch experiment in particular will be tested against Man Utd.
Another good win again with well worked goals. I didn't see all the game but what stood out to me from what I did see was triangles, triangles .....
Playing out from so deep has my heart in my mouth at times. I know it's meant to draw out the opposition and make space in midfield or beyond their defence, but I can't help feeling we'll come a cropper with it at times. Just not too many times, I hope.
I think carragher needs to look at the stats. It was top half games that we had to go to the well time and time again in. Lower half was largely piss easy until we blew up.
Deep is no issue. Slow play, dribbling in own half and lack of options are the issues. Look at pickford. Looked a moron. A bad touch plus zero options on as he was looking to punt anyway. As long as out players pass well and quickly amd move a couple yards to keep the passing lane open then we won't be caught too much. Top clubs do this all the time.
"So I was saying to Ivan he should've joined me on loan at Hull last season. Then he would've been Toney the Tiger!"
I agree that bit was a good response however somewhere else in that interview he said something like - Trent played loads of minutes at the Euros Hoping that’s his dry wit showing through and not his actual analysis lmao
As one of the more pessimistic on here I would never say it was ‘only’ anyone I believe all the games are tough No gimmes at this level as that is, imho, disrespectful to the opposition who have earned their place* As I have said before I never slate the players - and any going through comments I have made would find very little of that ilk from myself. What I will say though is IF we are to challenge come the end of a season for the league - then the 12:30 KO against a team likely to finish in the lower end are games we have to be looking to win. sometimes - and I have no idea how it happens - the team will tip up and they look - in general - like they think it will be a stroll in the park they must know what we know so it always irks me when we turn up like that (same for my grassroots teams - oddly the girls team I coach very rarely do it and when they do it’s usually because of my warm up for them - or lack of) *teams from greater Manchester always excluded
