Delap and Tufan though… Either way I think the notion that we ever stopped leaking silly goals under Rosenior is false. We still conceded way too many, albeit if we took the hand brake off abit more quite a few of them would’ve just ended up being consolation goals
His quality on the ball is so underrated too. How many full backs have scored with their weaker foot three times for us? Can't be many. It's a cliché but if he had a foreign name and had come from abroad people would see the quality he has. Because his image is that of being a leader and giving 100% first and foremost, it goes completely under the radar that he actually has really good feet too.
He was everything Walter wanted yesterday, always looking to pass forward, carrying the ball forward, overlapping, crosses into the box and then a goal to top it off. Would happily have him and Drameh either side. Giles isn’t mobile enough
I think the squad is still a way off in terms of quality in the starting XI and depth. I know Pandur was a bit iffy with his feet against Plymouth but his passing out from the back has been impressive in every other game we’ve seen him, in my opinion. Racioppi made a bad mistake but recovered well in the cup. I think we have two decent keepers who can still develop and improve. Full-backs and centre-halves look sorted for the most part. I’m still not convinced by Giles, especially defensively and Jacob is poor depth. If we can sign someone like Meffert to replace Seri and add experience and composure on the ball whilst offering defensive coverage, I think that will go a long way in settling the players in Walter’s style of play. Walter had him at Holstein Kiel and took him to Hamburg so it would make sense for him to bring him here too. Striker is the next big one. Estupiñán offers very little when you compare him to what Walter had at Hamburg in Glatzel. I think I’d rather have a striker who doesn’t score 15+ goals but is more technical, has a good first touch, can hold the ball up, contributes during build-up etc. than someone like Estupiñán whose only positive attribute is sometimes being in the right place at the right time. In terms of scoring goals, I think this system suits midfielders and wingers chipping in more which makes up for the lack of a prolific striker.
You’re bang on about the striker. We looked a bit more dynamic when Burtsow came on pinning their back line back. He was also better in the press purely due to have more speed. I made the comparison on twitter but it’s akin to having Harry Kane at the euros playing Oscar right now. He offers very little elsewhere and right now we need a player who can help with a lot more phases than just being a poacher
Giles just isn’t dynamic enough for me in this system. Drameh and Coyle both look miles better for me. Would happily sign a new one. Burrows would’ve been perfect…
Got back to Hull this afternoon after a 4 hour drive back from Bristol. Much better than the 5 and half hours it took to get there on Friday. I really hate how obsessed this country has become with average speed cameras. On the game, thought Coyle and Millar were good but as others have said, the rest very average. Potential is there and think we are developing, hopefully the new lads can get up to speed quickly. Have to say Plymouth’s fan park outside the ground was also fantastic, couple of food outlets, a live band, footy on a big screen and most importantly a bar with pints for £6 (very reasonable for the football imo). Would be good if we could get something similar. UTT
Plymouth Argyle head coach Wayne Rooney told BBC Radio Devon: "I felt we did enough to win the game so I am a little bit disappointed. But it's important that when you don't win, you don't lose. "There are lots of positives following up from last week. We had a real energy and commitment, and showed aggression at the right times. "And we created some good chances, but we weren't clinical enough - and we have to be more clinical. "But we're off the mark. I am pleased with the point but there are a lot of things to improve on. It was night and day compared to last week. I'm encouraged by what I have seen." Hull City boss Tim Walter told BBC Radio Humberside: "It's going to a hard season, a long season, if every game is like this. Every game is a tough game. It's very competitive. "But at the end we are happy with a point because we tried to create and build from the back - sometimes not like I prefer it, because we turned back. "We have to drive more forward. That is what I want them to learn to do. "But that is normal. The mentality showed - they have the bravery. It's never easy to play in a different style. We are just six or seven weeks together so it needs time." More from Rooney... https://www.hulldailymail.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/wayne-rooney-makes-big-claim-9491290
Completely disagree with that. I'd say Giles is the most promising of all of our defenders for this system I've seen so far, barring possibly Drameh. He fed Millar brilliantly yesterday and is a large part of why Millar is being noticed so quickly. Ömur has been anonymous... Look who he's got behind him at the moment. Coyle was excellent when he got forward yesterday, but he needs to be looking to do that more now, and helping create and play progressive passes. He needs to be part of this system in every phase. I can't recall him successfully playing the ball forwards many times yesterday and he was frustratingly safe to me. Coyle has stepped up time and time again so I'm sure he will adapt to this system, but he's not currently ahead of Giles as far as I've seen. Giles set up Oscar last weekend for what should have been our winning goal and consistently helps get us from defense to midfield.
I agree with this, I was the first to decry Giles when his effort levels were suspect but in the last two games, where he has been selected in his favoured position and perhaps told it is his to lose, he has performed with commitment and looked dangerous at times. He's not the world's greatest defender, but I'm not sure that is so important in Walter's system.
I'd also agree with the previous two posts, for me Coyle can't be faulted for his effort and he's pretty solid defensively, but he often tucks it tight to Jones to play safe leaving the oppo's left winger in acres of space, leading to him putting a tackle/block in that gets applauded. He also rarely takes the ball on the half turn, so ends up passing backwards or sideways. I think Drameh will offer none of that so will be preferred once fit.
Also I forgot to say, people calling for him to slot in at LB doesn't work for me, he played there a bit last season and it was even worse for having to turn back inside and play with his right foot straight back to the CB who'd given him it.
Coyle’s goal quite literally came from him playing a forward pass then he made a forward run to get the ball back. He skinned someone kept driving forward, played another forward pass to Millar then got it back and put it too corner. Absolutely zero chance Coyle will be getting replaced. On top of that he made 7 tackles and created 2 chances
We got home from Plymouth at just gone 8!!!....over 7 hours drive...the m5 was a nightmare....but we had great weekend though...Friday night in bristol, then a good night in the barbican area on Saturday,Plymouth fans spot on too!
I thought ourselves and Plymouth were two distinctly average sides though I think we will get better with more additions.
It did, and I noted that too, but it was a rare occasion he got forward, and look how it paid off. Hopefully he kicks on from that because he's a quality player and one of the better players in the side defensively. He needs to be more offensive consistently is my point.
They actually have a decent attack, we don’t really. Millar aside. Whittaker and Hardie would both start for us
Allahyar has been in the form of his career to start the season in Belgium this season. Think he’d have been a popular player under Walter but ultimately you can’t expect to be a success whilst being that injury prone. Would’ve much sooner see him given the Sinik treatment though
