Should Burstow be in the U21 this season or would you just have him in the first team?

We haven’t paid two million for a reserve team player, of that I’m fairly certain.

Not seen the fee anywhere, just "undisclosed", how do you reckon £2 mill?

He played 20 games last season for Sunderland (joining them on loan on 1st Sept).
Would be a big step backwards for him to go back to our Academy football.
Hopefully last season allowed him to cut his teeth at this level, and then, as with Delap, we take the benefit this season and beyond.

If we get a #9 in that's been spoken about. And if Oscar does stay. Where does Burstow fit this season?

2m would be such a big fee for someone who's not yet shown they're capable. I can only think that we paid a very low upfront fee and it can rise to 2m provided he achieves certain things that make the 2m worthwhile for us.

Can't have too many ...... strikers!!
It would be a GREAT problem to have, finally.
Top sides have striker options off the bench. I think we've got too accustomed to having little to no options.
Acun spoke about having 3 strikers. A proven high quality (blow your socks off) one, another striker and a younger one. That's the sort of set up / options we need if we're serious.
At any one time, it's quite possible that at least 1 of the 3 would be carrying an injury or niggle, so that leaves 1 to start and 1 on the bench.
Also then means promising academy players can be bloodied gently, not thrown in at the deep end (and another reason that it's a shame we keep getting knocked out of the League Cup at the first round each year!)

I’d be astounded if we paid £2m for him.

He only started in 12 of those and was subbed off in most of those. They were early on last season; he's only started 4 games in 2024.

A lot of his subs appearances were just for a few minutes. He spent half the season sat on the bench and not getting off it (for example, the 2 games against us).

Sunderland fans don't rate him but last season was a tumultuous one for the club and wasn't going to help anyone there on loan. They sacked a very good manager who knew what he was doing (and gave Burstow the majority of his starts), replaced him with a disasterous appointment who only lasted 12 games. He obviously didn't fancy Burstow as he only gave him 4 subs appearances in that time. Sunderland then played the rest of the season essentially without any leadership, and Burstow was either an unused sub or not even in the matchday squad for the remainder of the season as Sunderland fell apart.

Clearly not circumstances that any loan player is going to prosper.

Hopefully the lad has learnt something from the chaos he was exposed to, has strengthened as a player and a person and has the desire to really achieve at a stable and well run club.

I've heard 2 million but that's probably add ons etc. He'll be a first team squad player but if he can grab the bull by the horns, who knows.

I'm really hoping he does well, if only to gloat to my Sunderland supporting mates that they're knaa nowts as I regularly tell them anyway.
