Train drivers’ union Aslef will strike every weekend from end-August until November on LNER network. This dispute is separate from long-running row over pay, in which government has capitulated by agreeing big pay rises, backdated. LNER runs the passenger service on the East Coast main line between London and Edinburgh. Aslef accuses management of bullying and breaking agreements. LNER is owned and operated by the state. I suspect government will have capitulated before the month is out. Aslef knows a soft touch when it sees it. As the Police and politicians as well as the media seem to liaise with 'community leaders' who seem to be largely unellected and unaccountable, should they only be recogised if their communities meet the same diversity and inclusion standards as public bodies and companies? Surely with diversity being a strength, mosques and muslim communities would benefit from being led by white, gay women?

Bus drivers must be well pissed off. They have to deal directly with the public, and thread the bus through changing traffic in all conditions, all for minimum wage, while the train driver pretty much sits in a cosy hut with a stop/start handle on guided tracks.
