Observing Scott Twine last night reminded me of a young boy when he's not sure of what emotion to show.
Twine looked as though he didn't belong, especially at the final whistle with everyone else being over the moon with an excellent performance.

Managers and agents sometimes forget there's an important human being in all this.

***********************************BRISTOL CITY STILL WANT SCOTT TWINE ****************************************

Bristol City are set to make West Ham talent George Earthy their fourth signing of the summer with the 19-year-old arriving on a season-long loan, but Bristol Live understands that does not impact the Robins' pursuit of Scott Twine.

Earthy should arrive in the West Country this week in time for Saturday’s Championship clash against Millwall on Saturday, with the England Under-20 among the most talented individuals in the Hammers academy.

The Londoner, who has been with his boyhood club since he was an Under-6, made his Premier League debut last season under former City defender David Moyes, and scored his first goal against Luton Town at the London Stadium in May. He was also named Young Hammer of the Year and has been involved across pre-season.

With Lucas Paqueta, Mohammed Kudus, James Ward-Prowse effectively ahead of Earthy plus Crysencio Summerville and Luis Guilherme signed to boost attacking options out wide, Julen Lopetegui has ultimately deemed the attacking midfielder’s development will be best served with a sustained period of games at Championship level and City have won the race for his loan signature ahead of a number of their rivals.

Shortly before the end of last season, Moyes said of Earthy : “George is a really, really talented player. What George will need to do is build up and improve his strength and his power. His football ability is not in question one bit, but it will be more about how he can handle and come into the Premier League.

"You think of the likes of David Silva, players like that who might have been slight in stature but they still found a way. George’s challenge now will be to find a way of developing that to the point where he can become an established Premier League player.”

    p:nth-of-type(6)","type":"performPlaceholder","relativePos":"after"}" data-placeholder-placeholder="" data-response-start="536.1000000089407" data-type="placeholder" style="background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; border: 0px; font-size: 16px; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; color: rgb(20, 20, 20); font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif;">

Earthy is ostensibly a central playmaker but has played out wide and even in a slightly deeper midfield role during his time through the Hammers youth set-up. Liam Manning’s connections at the London Stadium, having spent four years at U23 manager, have undoubtedly aided City in their desire to bring the starlet to Ashton Gate.

However, Earthy’s arrival does not mean they’ve given up hope in trying to sign Twine, who was an unused substitute for Burnley for their Championship opener against Luton Town on Monday night as they ran out 4-1 winners at Kenilworth Road.

Twine has been a primary transfer target for City all summer after his injury-interrupted but encouraging loan spell over the second-half of last season but the Robins’ patience has been tested throughout considerable turmoil at Burnley.

The Clarets are continuing to drive a high price for City to purchase the 25-year-old, whose contract at Turf Moor runs until 2026, but hope remains in BS3 that a deal can still be struck for the Wiltshire-born midfielder. Twine himself has long been set on a return, preferably on a permanent basis, having been a peripheral figure for much of his time in Lancashire.

If anything, the expected signing of Earthy reduces an element of the time pressure around Twine, although the summer deadline is still two-and-a-half weeks away.

The potential for City signing Earthy and Twine is an interesting one given the assumption has been that Manning has only desired one playmaker but evidently an opportunity has presented itself and the club have acted swiftly.

Although City started the season against Hull City in a 4-2-3-1 with Max Bird in the No10 spot, the 23-year-old is expected to retreat into a more conventional midfield position, while Manning’s favoured system throughout his first seven months in charge was the 3-4-2-1 he tended to play while at MK Dons.

In that formation, which was helped by the arrival on Twine in January, he lined up with dual playmakers - Twine and Jason Knight and then Twine and Anis Mehmeti - and should City be successful is signing both attacking midfielders it lends itself to the possibility of a new combination there.

Manning has also constantly preached a message of competition being vitally important to the Robins progress in 2024/25 and the hope they can progress from being a reliable mid-table side into something more impressive and, in a perfect world, Twine and Earthy could therefore be pushing each other for inclusion.

We may indeed still be after Twine, but if Earthy arrives as is rumoured then Burnley won’t be able to force us into paying huge money for him because we have another option.

Well at least I can't accuse our club of being inactive during the summer lay-off. How nice it is to see a lot of potential looks at players hopefully capable of making us a better more resilient outfit. :emoticon-0137-clapp

It was a League Cup match ffs…. Everyone knows that the first round isn’t taken seriously by Championship clubs. Cov got the rub last night, stats wise we were better, but we couldn’t score - a familiar failing. It’s hardly time for your banners to be on the bridges of Bristol…..
