This is a ridiculous response. You don't need to find the joke funny to think a criminal conviction is absurd. Several comedians at the time spoke about their concerns, and at least some said they didn't think the video was funny. If you want an analysis of the video I'll give it a whirl, although it's years since I saw it and I don't remember it that well. I think the dog was initially saluting to "Heil Hitler" or "Sieg heil" or something and that was silly enough that it was somewhat amusing. Those phrases also made sense because they're directly linked to the salute and we're all used to jokes around that salute and those phrases. Saying "Gas the jews" doesn't work as well logically because there's no real link to the salute and it's too close to the bone, a reminder of something that isn't funny at all. So as a joke that bit doesn't work. But the idea this should lead to a criminal conviction is nonsense.
Well as we all know, you can get arrested for saying Happy Christmas in Sadiq Khan’s London. So best not say anything at all really.
I will agree as much as to say I think a fine or something is probably enough in this case. I don’t think any sane person thinks Gas the Jews is funny and therefore defending it as a joke sounds like when someone is caught bullying someone and says ‘it was just a joke’. But what is odd is we have anti-semitism twice in this thread. Once to prove we don’t punish anti-semites and once to prove we punish people who shouldn’t be. How about all anti-semitism - you know making light of the gassing of jews or talking about raping Jewish daughters - is punished? Because we are surely just too evolved as a society to see that as appropriate.
So Just stop oil should have a right to protest and block roads as an expression of free speech? Not much of the right wing would agree to that!
And weren’t the organisers of that jailed for a zoom call? How much different is that to writing what could potentially go in a zoom call down on text. And they still have the longest sentences so far. Longer than any of the people arrested recently (prior conviction related?)
I think there's a very clear distinction between a bad joke in what's clearly a silly video and (what appears to be, I don't care enough to go and look it up) a group of young men waving Palestinian flags and parading through the streets calling for Jewish women to be raped.
There is an even clearer distinction. When you post vile things online they have your name attached and they aren’t going anywhere. That makes them MEGA easy to prosecute. When you are walking down the street in a group, you are very hard to identify and proving who shouted what is MEGA difficult. So yes I think the ones shouting evil **** are worse. But I live in the real world and I know which one the police can deal with.
Something has just hit me about Trump’s recent lies about Harris having using AI to fake a large crowd Now it won’t escape many people’s notice that Trump is pure projection and every accusation from him is actually an admission of something he has done (and often worse). Theory being if he gets the accusation out first and then is found doing what he accused others of that it just looks childish when the others say “no - that’s you”. Actually highlighted with the recent “you’re weird” that the democrats actually got out first. The “nuh uh you’re weirder” hasn’t really landed as a response So does this mean AI crowds / rallies are on the horizon for Trump? Or use of AI for other things? Maybe even already? Will be interesting. I have seen suggestions of faked pictures of him but I haven’t looked into it and even if they exist they haven’t had a big impact. I don’t think AI is quite sophisticated enough - yet. On the flip side this might not be the usual projection / accusation tactic and might just be Trump losing it in a furious tantrum about the crowd sizes. It’s definitely not been a mature reaction to try and claim that having bigger rallies than him is fake and “cheating”. If having big rallies is cheating at elections do we get to remove his name from the record books? Didn’t think so. Just an idle thought whilst I struggle to get to sleep
How about we stop being authoritarian and we just... ignore jokes we find offensive. Crazy I know. Not everything needs a punishment. We shouldn’t be sending people to the gulags for hurty words and memes. Especially not when jails are already full and ACTUAL violent crime is spiralling out of control. They have released thousands of violent criminals early to create space for these people. People are now in even more genuine danger because Keir Stalin wants to virtue signal. Pure insanity.
The prisons are full, yes, but there are many people with mental health problems in prison who are not a risk to the public, who a generation ago would have been cared for in the NHS.
Os wants laws enforced and people deported or sent to prison. Os doesn’t want that to happen when racists might be impacted. Just don’t use hate speech, bro. I have never felt the need to post hate speech, but I guess that is my low testosterone. Real men are racist, bro!
You clearly have a problem with reading comprehension if that is what you have taken from the conversation
Not only is that a childish response, but it’s also a complete lie. You are embarrassing yourself as usual
It isn't childish to point out that you have been blowing the racist dog whistle for weeks: "Time to get serious about individuals that commit crime who weren’t born here. Deportations and harsher punishments needed." "Yeah it’s never Muslims is it" "This is the scumbag that showed up at the vigil with a machete" --> Nobody had a machete. "Just saying that by using basic pattern recognition it’s obvious." "They will pretend it’s “mental health” again probably and do all they can to hide the perpetrators background." All classic racist dog whistles.
Why are you lying?: “I agree with you though - need to wait for evidence. But it’s denying reality to pretend otherwise. The defending silence from the police on this is contributing to more riots” I said it’s obvious why people jumped to that conclusion. Not that I jumped to a conclusion myself. You know you are losing the argument so you’re trying to lie about me. Embarrassing from you.
