Coventry City travel to Bristol City in an all-Championship clash in the first round of the EFL Cup on Tuesday night.
Coventry City make the journey west to face a Bristol City side who started their 2024/25 campaign with a draw on the road against Tim Walter’s Hull City.

The Robins looked to have snatched all three points late on as summer signing Fally Mayulu fired home the opening goal on 84 minutes to put the visitors ahead. However, the hosts equalised late on as Oscar Estupinan levelled from the spot.

Nevertheless, it marked a fair start to the season for Liam Manning’s side, despite the disappointment of dropping points late on.

As for Coventry City, they opened their campaign with a defeat, losing away to Stoke City.

A goal from Lewis Baker was enough to send the Sky Blues back to the CBS Arena with nothing to show for their efforts. It means Mark Robins and co will be determined to put things right on Tuesday night.

Coventry embarked on a run to the FA Cup semi-final last season. Emulating that success in any competition this time around will be a big ask, but it will be the aim for Robins after the run brought such joy.

Here, a handful of our writers make their predictions for the game…

    James Ray
“This should be a fairly close game between two Championship sides, although I am leaning towards a home win. Coventry City have an abysmal record in this competition and after starting their season with an away defeat, they may fall to another here.

“The Sky Blues haven’t made it beyond the first round since 2020 and have been knocked out before the third round in all but one year since 2008.

Bristol City will be keen to capitalise on that by progressing and with the home faithful behind them for the first time this season, I’ll back them to do so. They’ve got something different up top in Mayulu and Sinclair Armstrong to recent years, and that could make them a handful.
    “I’ll go for a 2-1 home win.”

Prediction: Bristol City 2-1 Coventry City

    Harry Mail
Hull City were there for the taking for Bristol City so they will be disappointed that they didn’t win. The Robins have the distraction of the cup now though and it is a chance for them to boost their confidence.

“Liam Manning could look to freshen up his ranks and give some other players the chance to show what they can do.

“As for Coventry City, they will want to bounce back from their 1-0 loss away at Stoke City. That was a poor start for Mark Robins’ side.

“This is a tough tie to call as it is hard to know how either will approach it. I’m edging towards the visitors though based on the quality of their attacking options like Ellis Simms, Haji Wright and Brandon Thomas-Asante.”

Prediction: Bristol City 1-2 Coventry City

We say: Bristol City 1-2 Coventry City
Bristol City will be desperate to win in front of their Ashton Gate faithful after dropping two points in the final moments at Hull on the weekend.

Coventry have a number of exciting attackers who are set to start on Tuesday even if Robins elects to rotate his XI, so we are envisaging progression into the second round for the Sky Blues.

No league cup games on Robins TV. But it’s on Sky Sports +.

Just got home and saw the score at 0-0 and within 5 minutes we gave up the expected goal to go behind 0-1. Surprise.

We need a keeper, Bajic is poor. It’s only the cup, but we’ve been poor throughout, especially second half. Hopefully Saturday in the league we’ll be much better.

Gotta say a lot of improving required if we are serious about top six.
    Not impressed with that tonight.

I don't know about you but I am starting to ask why, as BCFC supporters, we are forced to live in a world of disappointment and low expectations regarding the fortunes of our club? Another season has started by giving away 2 points in a game we should have won, if not for a ridiculously rash tackle by Williams resulting in a late penalty continuing our trend to blow games in the last few minutes. Then we follow it up with another defeat on our home ground in the Carabao Cup which could have offered us the chance of more matches where Liam could ring the changes to test other players but then we capitulated to another team we could have beaten. I haven't even had the chance to watch City live due to stupid kick-off times and other TV coverage but it all sounds way too familiar to make me believe that we will challenge this season because in my mind we do not progress as other clubs pass us by on their way up the table. When oh when will we ever get something right for us to cheer and when will the next crisis hit us for six?

Other than Fally's goal Saturday we didn't created anything, and tbf it was their cock up.
    Same again tonight, toothless.

Tonight was again like watching Manningball last season.
    It's all so bloody predictable.
Yeh, I know it's the game now but fock me it's not easy to watch.

You may have missed that I was lucky enough to miss both games and I'm sorry about the doom and gloom but I've almost given up as well. <wah>

I’m never bothered by results or performances in the first couple of rounds of the League Cup

However if we’re as lacklustre and impotent against Millwall it will be a cause for genuine concern

Coventry did seem to want to win, whereas we treated it more as a training exercise to give fringe players a run out, that’s the only consolation. Both sides started with scratch sides, and tbf we dominated at that point, without really creating much. Then Coventry bought on 5 at once, to make themselves prettty much their strongest 11, whereas we continued to continue with a team full of fringe players, at which point it was men against boys, and they deservedly came out on top. To me what is most worrying is that over the two games I don’t see much evidence of improvement from Mannings pre season, and “time on the grass” with the players.

I'd give him 10-12 league games and see where we are
If we haven't shown any improvement by then, it will be time to change (again)

I thought we looked all a bit unorganised, disjointed and as time went on our passing and decision making got worse..
I didn’t think that Coventry were all that and we allowed them far too much time to get into the game..
That was a really poor performance from us and the only positive for me was Mayulu whom seems like a good signing but will need some decent service or will be wasted if continue with that approach..
