After we brought on Millar and Jarvis we were much the better team. 3 very good chances and they created very little. First half was ****e but we still created 2 very good opportunities.
Let’s be honest, it was two very poor teams. If Bristol had even a half decent forward line they’d have battered us.
And the inability to pass the ball or construct any kind of move to get us out of our half would’ve been forgotten. You’re not telling me you thought that was a decent display?
Its a point on the board and some encouraging signs of what tim is trying to do, but also showed there's a long way to go and the way LR drilled the safety first approach is still heavily influencing the back 4 that started....hence tims re programming comments during the summer and his comments post match. Still doesn't change the fact we could have just as easily beaten them 3-0 another day
We created miles better chances than them all game even when they were on top. They reminded me a lot of us last season
Five points for first choice, three for second, one for third. Pandur 153 Jones 87 Millar 44 Simons 38 Coyle 21 Jarvis 16 Mehlem 16 Omur 6 Oscar 4 Jacob 3 Mcloughlin 3 Pandur's start at the club has been shaky to say the least, but fair play to him, first competitive match and he's our man of it. Promising signs from Millar and Jarvis giving us a bit more attacking intent when they were introduced. Looked like Simons had a bit more about him after what must have been a frustrating season for him last year. Jones, Coyle, Mehlem steady. Everyone else? We need a bit more.
I'm not writing them off by any means but I'd love to know exactly what were these encouraging signs. To my eyes, the team has regressed massively since last season and we were all over the place in all aspects of the game.
We were in complete control from my perspective after Millar and Jarvis came on. We were the only team who looked like scoring, that was pretty consistent throughout the game too. You take away our errors and Bristol created nothing, unlike us who carved out 4 opportunities that should’ve been goals. Oscar’s first chance, Jarvis straight at the keeper, Oscar from the Millar cross and Mehlem’s chance he ballooned
There were moments where we far more able to get the ball through the lines and get into dangerous positions. We had about 6 that I can think of right now that led to high quality chances. Slater's cross/shot, Jacob's volley, Oscar's chance he should have scored, Jarvis' chance he should have crossed, Mehlem shot and Millar's cross inches away from Oscar. We created really decent opportunities despite not having an abundance of creative players on the pitch and not to mention Macca and Jacob's relative struggles playing out. What we've sacrificed admittedly is a bit of defensive stability in terms of the ability of losing the ball in dangerous areas and yes a better team probably takes advantage of those. Its hard not to agree that we have regressed but I think that is more down to the quality of players on the pitch we had towards the end of last season. This new system is clearly going to create chances for both sides but with some more quality on the back line and in the midfield it should allow us to control games a bit more. The early signs in an actual competitive game were promising. We just need to get a lead in a game to see how teams adapt to chasing us and see how that goes. I'm of the belief that one of those early 3 chances go in we probably win the game on Saturday. Bristol are a good side and probably a good litmus test for how we fair this season
