Gutted. Loved him playing for England - could always rely on him with a scrappy 40-odd when all around him were getting knocked over. RIP Thorpey
Agreed, propped England up at times with his grit - not to mention his considerable skill. One of my favourite players from that era. Far too young, RIP Graham.
That is a shocker. Does anyone know if he had been ill, or was it sudden? Excellent batsman, who I loved to watch. Much like Gower, his timing was perfect. He just seemed to caress the ball to the boundary. RIP Thorpey.
Wow no way. One of my favourites to watch in my younger days. Great batsman Ecit: if memory serves wasn’t he seriously ill a few years ago? Sure I remember, her something about that from one of the tests I think in 22?
Same here mate, I seem to escape every week like Strictly Come Dancing ... ... yet I've just lost two good mates, younger than me, and two more on the 'endangered list'. RIP Thorpey.
Seems he took his own life mate. His wife has revealed today. Anxiety and depression. Tried in 2022 and sadly got it right this time. Rest in peace Thorpey
RIP Thorpey It was always a treat to watch him play and it is fitting to post this tribute from back in July 2016; 'This month we are privileged to speak to a left-handed batsmen who played countless match-winning innings in both Test and limited-overs cricket, and helped transform England from the also rans of the 1990s to the battle-hardened, successful side of the mid-2000s. It is of course Graham Thorpe – the most complete England batsmen of his generation. His ability to handle both pace and spin with ease, in all conditions, saw him go on to score nearly 7,000 Test runs for his country at an average of just under 45, in an era when a number of the greatest bowlers to have ever played the game were turning their arms over.' https://addisarmycricket.co.uk/interview-6/
That is really sad mate. Seems like we're hearing more and more about ex top sportsmen suffering from mental illness. Must be hard to be right at the top then your career ends and you have to blend into the background.
Totally heartbreaking mate....I always thought when you get these highly gifted people that with some there is an eccentricity where their life is always on the edge. One side a fantastic cricketer.......the other side someone with many demons in the closet. He had it all....family, cricket superstar, no doubt wealth but it was not enough for him....tragic.....god bless him.
Seems like the Gary Speed one with his suicide.....just cant get my mind around it...suppose I never will until your in the same situation....tragic :-(
