Our tendency to shoot ourselves in the foot is my biggest concern coming into this season. There can be very slim margins to stay in this league and this feels like the most likely reason for us to drop points.
We have come quite a way from the disaster that was 2022/23 though and SR are still in their infancy.
Oh I agree, but with every year that goes by, and with FFP being such balls, it gets harder and harder to do.
Think this is where we disagree, I think we have regressed since 22/23 in terms of squad ability, which is worrying when we are going into another PL season and we know how that one ended up performing
I tried to post a head to head 22/23 vs 23/24 but too tired and can’t be bothered. I think we are weaker atm, hopefully not by the end of the window. Hopefully. Team togetherness only lasts so long during a run of defeats.
Problem with that is that you still need quality to compete in the PL, and we only have two players (one almost certain to leave) who are proven at this level plus a few more we're assuming/hoping will be. Team spirit will only take you so far. Luton had that in spades last season but only got one more point than we did in 22/23. They also managed 52 goals which I can't see our current squad getting close to. Think there's also a good chance that team spirit evaporates somewhat when we start taking a few hammerings.
Have to agree, I’m pretty shocked at how few we’ve managed to bring in. Our finances must be worse than we think
The argument is it’s not really a choice but a necessity. You can’t go paying over the odds for players as that doesn’t ultimately lead to ‘survival’ however I get your basic point It’s a tough job for a promoted team, staying in the Prem and not just temporarily with a bigger crash coming later due to financial problems
I think it's more to do with PSR than our actual finances. I'm sure we actually have the money to spend on players, but we can't spend what we want without breaching PSR rules. Last season in the Championship is really handicapping us. Getting the likes of ABK and KWP out of the door will help. Tall Paul perhaps as well but right now I think we need to keep him due to our lack of CF options.
I was going to post something along these lines yesterday. If we have money but just can’t spend until we sell then it makes it much more likely we sell Alcaraz for a “small” fee just to allow us to spend. If we actually don’t have any money then there isn’t any point in selling Alcaraz unless we get a £30m+ offer as we wouldn’t be able to afford anyone to replace him with anything less. As nobody knows how PSR works how much money gets freed up selling ABK or Alcaraz for roughly what we bought them for is anybody’s guess. Logic says it only allows us to spend what we get for them, which won’t make much impact but PSR doesn’t seem to follow much logic
I don't really think I understand PSR. Why not just spend now and sell when the opportunity arises? It isn't like the league check your finances on a weekly basis. I would rather risk a 2 point deduction next season than definitely get relegated this season.
Last week Russ said Ross is back in full training and will play when he has had two weeks training without any issues... He has probably broken since then.
The club are hiding yet another injury from us it seems. Almost unbelievable that he hasn’t featured in preseason at all. I think he’s a complete write off at this point.
I think it is more that the club don't want to risk having a massive wage bill which could cripple us. If we brought in 2 or 3 new faces then failed to move on Onuachu, ABK & KWP then we would be committed to spending millions on wages for players that likely won't contribute. Martin alluded to this when he was discussing how our squad is quite large still. Similarly if we bought first then teams might know we are desperate to sell and low ball us.
I don’t really understand how Leicester are bidding £22m for a Greek striker, and trying to get Zaha on loan, whereas we are….well…not.
