I think how long it’s sometimes done for in a game before you actually progress is the real issue.

If the Press is right you have to be patient. Add into that we have players of the ability of Matty Jacob and Lewie Coyle in those positions we as fans need to show equal patience.

Id love nothing more than to see us play 5 passes and be in the oppo box but even Man City can't manage that very often.

Sorry, but I just don’t get this “they pressed well” stuff.

We invited Bristol on by trying to play out from the back. They kept closing us down (as any team should, seeing such an opportunity). Maybe I’m old-school but it just seems common sense.

When we play Sheffield Wednesday next or Plymouth on Saturday, if we concede many chances again, are we going to hear the same thing again, as an excuse for this crazy system?

I guess I just don’t like this new terminology too. It’s like someone thinks they’ve come up with a great idea but it’s all been seen before.

Oh and I know other teams do it. And I see them conceding chances from it too! <yikes>

We can play five passes and still be in our own area, five passes later we're still in our own half and then give the ball away to the opposition. :emoticon-0138-think

Yup, and so can Man City. I saw them do it plenty of times last year.

It's frustrating but it's the evolving of the game. Unless we buy players for 10 mil each to play in those positions we're gonna end up making a lot of errors.

The choice isnt limited to a goalkeeper playing it a few yards from the goal and kicking it a long way
there are many other options with a good chance of retaining possession without the risk of conceding a goal

Frig knows how players managed to regularly pass the ball forward in a timely manner, and actually find one of their own players, in years gone by. Not to worry though, I'm sure in the future some manager will come up with a new idea that all others must copy. That is all. :emoticon-0138-think

I know what you're saying but the way teams set up to press is also a big evolvement in the game. Tottenham were pinned up under Potch as the best at being so aggressive with it but it started before that. I watched highlights of a Man Utd v Blackburn game from the Fergie era recently as part of some research i was doing and it was clear then they sat off them much more so than teams do now. The shutdown was taking place in midfield.
Throw ins went backwards to ful backs who were able to bring it to halfway without any marker near them.

It would take a lot more research to answer the question 'what came first, the press or the play out from the back'. Potentially the press was a counter to people like Pep who are believed to initiate that style. Either way it's here to stay for now as every team is trying it. Plymouth did it OK at times today but then gave it away in midfield. Players not good enough if the shutdown is timed right.

Its being taught to coaches now through the FA and UEFA courses. 2 of the FA defensive principles are 'Delay' and 'Press' however to be fair one of the attacking principles is 'Penetratre' and play forward at every opportunity, something that has escaped some of our defenders :)

Many of the non-league coaches are ex players in recent years so it will be soon engrained in the majority around the higher levels of the game. I'm asking my U10s to do it, and they can but obviously still make plenty of errors. Its here to stay, even if noisy Jeff in E10 doesnt like it.

I’d really love to know what Walters background is. He seems to have a futsal background more than a football one based on the fact that everyone is involved even the keeper, the best futsal teams in the world play with a fly keeper…

Yeah I was wondering the same about him, something has made him rip up the playbook like Bielsa has and tried to forge his own style. You have to admire his courage but at the same time it has not actually worked for him anywhere yet and he could be just a mad scientist that is always searching for that new thing but all he does is break a lot of test tubes and go a bit crazy!

I suppose it did at Hamburg to some extent, he got their equivalent of play offs both times. Missed out on automatic on the last game in the last minute

Probably on balance but it was so marginal, he got unlucky with getting stutgart in the playoffs though, they finished 2nd last season following playing his side in the play offs…

Well the simple answer is that that used to be the game. Both sides taking it in turns to punt it up the pitch until something fell for a striker. If both teams are doing it then it's no problem. Once one side realises that they're far better off trusting themselves to pass deliberately to each other systematically and not just getting rid of it, everyone else has to adapt otherwise they'd be easily beaten.
