We do have a chance, I believe, of getting quite far this year. In the past, we've come unstuck at either the other English sides, who know our game too well, or Barcelona, who are just too good (though we should have won last year had it not been for the van persie red card bull****). But now that the English sides are struggling (I only expect United to SCRAPE through with City and Chelsea in the Europa League) we should go far. We can beat teams like Milan, Zenit, Porto, Lille etc quite easily, IMO. And even REAL and BAYERN are teams where, I believe, we can win. It's just the way Madrid play, I can see us getting a result. Against them in 06, no-one thought we'd get a result, we did. Granted, our team was probably better back then, but why not now? Our Counter Attacks can make mincemeat of them. As for Bayern, they are a very good side, and I would stick a tenner on them winning the Champions League. But we can beat them. Winning the Champions League? Maybe. Barcelona would probably beat us in the end, they've learned from their mistakes against us, by buying Fabregas and Sanchez to attack even more. But if they get knocked out against another side, we can beat that other side. It's a kind of Rock-Paper-Scissors situation. As the Scissors, we can't be Barca (Rock) but we can easily beat the team that beats THEM. The sort of team to knock Barca out would be a Bayern or a Napoli or something. We certainly have a much higher chance of winning it than the Premier League. I'm confident that, if we avoid Barcelona, we can at least make the Semis this year. Signing Podolski and another top quality player who isn't cup tied would also help. Prediction of the final: Arsenal vs Bayern.
thats the champions league for you mate, a good draw can see you go to the semis or further, a bad one and you can be out in the last 16. take bayern munich when they got to the final in the 09/10 season. last 16 they got fiorentina, last 8 they scraped through against man u by the skin of their teeth, and in the semis they got lyon, hardly one of the giants. if they'd drawn a barcelona in the last 16 they'd probably have been out. its not always the best team that wins the tournament once you get to the knockout stage
I'm confident against alot of the european teams and also against the english teams this year. Provided we don't meet Real or Barca i think we can go all the way to the final.
With a good draw (avoiding Barca in Q Finals) and a few top performances similar to the 2-1 victory over dortmund we could definitely reach the semi's or even the final. The only teams that would worry me are Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, who are in my view probably the best team in Europe at this point in time. That said, even Barca has fallen back to earth somewhat this season. Perhaps Cesc is cursed as a player and doomed never to win. I would love to beat them in the final, if we did I probably wouldn't mind if Arsenal never won another game (ok maybe that is taking it a bit too far....)
If we won the CL but fell from the top 4 i'd find it hilarious as whoever managed the 4th spot would lose there place
I hadn't thought that far nor about that Afcftw. Hilarious indeed and wouldn't it be nice after all our trials to win the CL Pretty long shot though but you never know
I can imagine it now: "At long last Arsenal win the Champions League! And in doing so have stopped Spurs from qualifying for the elite european competition after Tottenham managed a 4th placed finish" - It'd be priceless!
Why would you ever drive through that area in the first place? I would rather drive around chernobyl.
Liking the potential scenario that Spurs finish 4th and we win the CL thereby taking their place I think we've got a decent chance of winning the comp, we tend to do well against European opposition. Last season we beat Barca, so we can beat anybody. I still believe that if RVP hadn't been given that scandalous red card, then we could have won that 2nd Leg too. Bendtner almost nicked it for us anyway. Our sqaud is stronger than last season, I still think we need another CF (or OXO on the right and Walcott up front) but the raw ingredients are there for us to win this comp.
I think it depends on who we're drawn against in the knockout stages Jayram. We might actually avoid Barca and Madrid and get to the final. Although it's highly likely that we'd have to face one of those teams if we're going to win it.
Not happening fellas. For me both R Madrid and Barca are head and shoulders above everyone in Europe right now, our run to the knockout stages have given us continued income we need, but I'm realistic enough to know that if we were to come up against either of these sides in a 2 leg tie I think we'd be second best
Without the red card for RVP (truely the worst red card ever handed out) i think we would have progressed past Barca and potentialy gone all the way in the competition. This year our squad are a little different but still capable of pulling off some good results. I don't fancie playing Barca or Real over two legs tbh as i think the odds would be stacked against us even thoug we would put up a decent show and who knowsm aybe get a result. For me it depends on the draw. If we can get to the final before playing one of the spanish teams we have a good chance of winning this trophy. I like our odds against most of the european teams and the english teams should they progress. I see us getting to the QF regardless even if we get AC Milan. Then if we get the italian teams, Zenit, Leverkusen, Chelsea, Porto, ajax or a french team in the QF i fancie us to go through. Then you hope not to get either spanish team until the final
