Think there's a good chance we lose by 4+ on the opening day tbh.

Newcastle won 5-1 on the opening day last season. Against a team who ended up being the 4th best in the country.

Hardly pesssimistic to suggest we may be in for a tonking with our championship level squad.

Yeah I think that is a fair view. Martin himself said we haven't really added to our starting 11 from last year as our 2 main signings were already here.

Plus with just 9 days to go and nothing seemingly imminent, it is getting to the point where any new signings probably won't arrive in time to feature on the opening day.

Only just seen this thread? Not sure why / how I missed but I’m more inclined to worry about if we can top the most >4 goal defeats in a PL season :emoticon-0101-sadsm

Martin said himself that something is close.

He did, but unless we have managed to keep something completely under wraps, which is very rare these days, then we haven't had any bids accepted. So would be at least 3 or 4 days (bid/contract/medical etc) from getting anyone in.

I thought he said there are things "well on the way"? Not sure that's the same as saying something is close or imminent.

9 days now until the first match. I can't remember how far ahead they'd typically travel up to Newcastle. Someone may come in before that match but there's a decent chance they won't be involved at all.

Maresca’s pre season at Chelsea rings the alarm bells for me. The way they have conceded goals for fun with their playing out from the back, posessionheavy style bodes ill for a squad with nothing like the same quality of players. Every team in the league will try and press the **** out of us and it will be very like the start of last season. Remember sunderland away? Hudds at home?
I think it will settle as players adjust to the pace and quality of the league but early doors it will be tougher than anything they faced last season.

100% I fear a battering at NU but the half glass full in me thinks? ….. nah hopes, we can snatch a late point. Deluded, I know!

I went for 3 to provide a bit of blind optimism to the thread and so I could be the only one to be right if it does somehow miraculously happen

We’re going to Newcastle so I’m hoping I survive at least one game
I don’t think Forest will kill it so maybe even two?

When I saw this I thought there's going to be a couple it is inevitable.

I will say when last season began I thought 'Oh well at least we won't get utterly hammered this season I suppose'. Yet in a promotion season we still managed to get drubbed 5-0 twice.

Long time Saints fan and I can count on the fingers of one hand a season where we did get thrashed at least once (4-0 minimum). It is not much less where we haven't been really hammered at least once in a season.

So with this history behind us, our apparent love of getting hammered 6-0 or 6-1 at least once a season - we will get thrashed at least once, probably twice.

I'd say our favourite is 6-0. I can remember a lot of those. So someone will do that to us this season. Often it is Spurs.
