For @Montysoptician, the only band I ever saw at Dunelm House. I was still at school. The gig was part of a Radio 1 show, Rock Goes To College I think it was called. Anyway, I was there with two mates and we got our school, Belmont Comp, a mention on the national airwaves. The band didn’t play this song mind.
OK, this is going to be a hard sell but, bear with me. I've heard all kinds of punk bands, rock bands and every kind of angry anti-establishment bands you can name ... ... but absolutely nothing comes close to this for saying 'Go and get f*cked, i don't give a shiny about what you think'. No effects, no backing singers and no hiding place from a woman who was about six stone wringing wet.
No hard sell needed here Smug, class that. The film of her life, "la Vie en Rose" is well worth watching if you haven't seen it. That woman was tough.
I have the DVD mate but only watched it once in ten years, didn't dare risk seeing it again. I fully intend to watch it again but I need to be in a happy mood at the start ... ... maybe Saturday afternoon after we batter Cardiff
Too young for the Bay Hotel so missed some top bands . Managed a few at the Mecca out of my pocket money . Bet you couldn't say that today !! Still listen to this today. Then of course I went the next time. He's been on the Alex at Grangetown years ago. Very underrated guy. Crackin !!
When I went to Monkwearmouth College back in 1982 a lad I knew was really into this bloke. A great song anyway…,
Zal Cleminson what a poser, sadly I never saw them, but I recon they would have been a great live band.
Queen played the Mecca around 1974. Older lads told me who they'd seen at the weekend. Bowie at the Rink . Hendrix in sunny Shields way back. A few I can remember at the Bay.
Red Russian Army Choir & Leningrad Cowboys - Delilah SPB24 (youtube.com) Watch this version. These lot are off their tits. Funny as visually but superb musicians. Sax is brill and anybody with a guitar shaped like a tractor is OK in my book. They do brilliant covers of Stairway to Heaven and a few p*ss taking covers inc of of Titanic. 2 drunk russians with an accordion.
They were on the Mecca/Locarno at Sunderland and just sprayed the place red. A few weeks later when they were back there were 8x4' sheets of ply, tarpaulins and all sorts to try and protect the place haha
