As I recall aggravated burglary is committing any burglary and having with you
    Weapon of offence
    Imitation firearm
    Firearm
    Explosive
    Gets you 14 years
Got nothing to do with doing harm to someone. That would likely be robbery and that gets you life.

Some businesses in Durham City being advised to close tonight and all day tomorrow by police, and police warnings on Facebook advising folk to stay away from city centre from now.

Cracking post this one. I would also add with regard to those above making decisions that for a number of years now fast tracking up the ladder with degrees has taken away some of the streetwise supervision who have worked their way up the ladder. Policing is 99 per cent common sense and having the ability to communicate with different people at their level. A lot of the senior ranks now haven't had street work due to quick promotions. Dealing with a real life situation is totally different to what the manual says. I suppose im saying lack of experience at top level. Also number of cops have fallen over the last few years so you don't have much to spare on a shift. I feel for the cops of today with cameras and phones and body cam all over the place. I'm pleased I'm out as I probably wouldn't last long with today's technology.

Sorry I should have clarified. Burglary is defined as entering a building or any part of a building as a trespasser with intent to commit

    Damage
    Inflict GBH
    Rape
    Theft

So the actual basic offence of burglary will get you up to 14 years. It becomes aggravated when you take your WIFE with you.

I’m really dragging these definitions up from the pit of my brain mind. I haven’t had to remember them for some time now!

edit - looks like rape has been removed

Burglary and buggery are very similar offences aren't they ...

... both often involve going in through the back door without the owner's consent <laugh>

    Sorry mate, couldn't resist.

It's interesting to hear the opinions of people with obvious experience.

    You, Whitty, Monty, etc.

The bottom line is that most street cops joined for the same reason. To lock up bad people and keep the community safe. As @Whittylad says earlier though, the race to the top has diluted the common sense that used to be, well, common, within the police.

'BBC Reality Check has examined Boris Johnson's claim that Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer failed to prosecute Jimmy Savile when he was director of public prosecutions (DPP) and has found no evidence that Sir Keir was involved at any point in the decision not to charge Savile.'

ive read that this is a fallacy, that it was a prosecutor under him but he was unaware of the investigation being dropped.
