Okay, so getting to the heart of the issue, other than whether the specific legislation is technically legal or not, what are you against?
Seriously- a refugee fleeing persecution who finds themselves in a capital city of a european state - and wish to apply for refugee status and to come legally to the UK - what is the procedure ??? I ask because it has been reported that British embassies have been ordered to NOT take ANY refugee applications. KTF
To claim asylum in the UK you have to be in the UK under the current rules. Once you're here, you phone the Home Office/asylum intake unit. To stay in the UK as a refugee you must be unable to live safely in any part of your own country because you fear persecution there. If you're stateless, your own country is the country you usually live in.
To claim asylum, you say, you have to be first in the UK ?!?!?!?!! To claim asylum you first must illegally enter the UK !?!?!?!?!?! WTF. SURREAL. Why not allow them to apply, while outside the UK and then assess. Should the application be turned down and they then illegally enter the extradition would be automatic. No messing about. Am l missing something ? KTF
I suppose if you applied while you were somewhere else, you'd get people choosing to go to certain places rather than the nearest safe place, which I believe is how its supposed to work. If you're already here, then here is the nearest safe place. https://www.gov.uk/claim-asylum
Sorry but as l understand it a refugee when they reach the first safe place(eg any european state) they can then apply for asylum in any country that has signed the relevant convention. Then that state checks to see if they meet the requirements. If they do then welcome. But we appear to deny them the ability to approach a UK embassy to start the process. Leaving those who wish to come to the UK no choice but to put themselves into the hands of criminal gangs. So we are actually feeding these criminals. No logic in this at all.
I'm no expert on this but a quick Google suggests that most countries expect you to be in their territory in order to claim asylum. Embassies aren't, despite the myth to the contrary, the territory of the country who's embassy it is. They are part of the host country's territory, they just don't apply their laws there.
Look IMHO it will never work till we stop the boats coming over, the French are taking the piss. We should have the navy take them back to France.
But it is the first step in the process. Apply for asylum in the country of your choice via that countrys embassy l mean that is the way it was intended surely. A refugee cannot flee the offending state and magically appear in blighty.
I think you're supposed to go to the nearest safe country. I mean, if you're being persecuted or are in danger, you're wasting time hanging around embassies when you could be legging it to the nearest safe place.
You can blame the people who voted for Brexit for that Bob ... "Britain can no longer return Channel migrants to France because of Brexit, Lord Cameron has indicated. The Foreign Secretary said a migrant returns agreement with France to help break up smuggling gangs and stop people making the perilous journey across the Channel was “simply not possible”. 24th April, 2024
Canny bit of unrest across the country tonight. Another stabbing in Ipswich earlier on apparently. Nee idea of race/religion of victim or perpetrator. Some media outlets quoting 17 stabbings in 24hrs. Again, no idea of race etc, just posting the numbers quoted which are horrific if true.
Nothing will happen in Clacton ... ... the local MP has vanished, since the election, but I'm sure he'll be back soon.
That's beside the point, it was possible before Brexit but that agreement ended. The previous government did send some back but simply didn't process them quickly enough.
3 main things: 1) People being smuggled into this country and disappearing without trace 2) The length of time it is taking to process all of these people 3) People arriving here without documentation who are not fleeing tyranny, holding up the processing of people who are and possibly jeopardising their chances of being accepted because of the sheer volume of claims.
