The protests are futile because the government is futile. Even if it wanted to massively intervene on behalf of Gazans, its standing in both the world and the region is negligible to the point of irrelevance. This is especially true since Brexit, so whereas the UK used to be a leading member of Israel's second-largest trade bloc, it is now way down the list. Israel does more trade with the Palestinians than it does with the UK. It isn't even a matter of wanting or not wanting to take a moral stance and intervene: it can't intervene.

fWIW, I'll never see Israel as comparable to the likes of Syria or Iran. I believe Israel even in it's current political form has the capacity and potential to be a real force for good in the world, as it was under leaders like Rabin and Peres.

Countries like Iran and Syria need full-scale revolutions to turn things round. Israel needs a change in leadership. That change is coming - there is no way Netanyahu will survive this whole episode. Last poll I checked said over 70% of Israelis want him gone.

The next GE there will be crucial. It can only lead to one of two outcomes: either the renaissance of the peace movement after years in the doldrums, or a push even harder to the right than Netanyahu, which will be the beginning of a one-state solution.

The protests are futile, but that wont stop people from doing it.

The point being made is you werent happy with how long the marches have been going on compared to other causes like syria. Its very simple, there wouldn't have been anymore (at least on the pro palestine side) if the uk had taken action against israel.

I can't say i agree with israels actions but at least bwood calls it as it is, he doesnt ever think there will be peace and the removal of palestinians from gaza.

You can only imagine the kind of abuse that goes on inside those prisons and detentions centres.

Kids detained on the streets for waving flags, incarcerated and tortured by sick bully boys.

All you need to do is see the stuff which went on in Abu Ghraib.

I imagine whatever these IDF are doing is a lot worse.

    Jesus wept.

I pity the fact that most people get their 'facts' from random twitter accounts.

    Ok, here's what happened:

The Sde Teiman military prison was last week the scene of massive protests by the Israeli far-right, because of the fact that soldiers who had been accused of abusing a number of Gazan prisoners had been arrested and incarcerated there pending trial in front of a tribunal.

The entire government from right to left condemned both the protests and the behaviour of the soldiers held there. The only party supporting the protests and calling for a free for all against all Gazan terrorists is the far-right Otzma Yehudit. The bloke in a green shirt shouting into the microphone is a member of that party. Even from this brief clip, it is obvious that the investigating panel is incredulous that he sees no issue with what happened.

In short: IDF soldiers who were attacked and bitten by a Gazan prisoner during a transfer from Ofer Prison reacted by beating him to within an inch of his life. He is now being treated in an Israeli hospital. The soldiers were arrested and now await trial at which they are expected to be found guilty.

Meanwhile not a single person has ever been held accountable for the atrocities at Abu Gharib and Guantanamo. In fact the prosecution of Major General Geoffrey Miller for orchestrating routine torture and starvation there was quashed by US Army Command.

The fact that it's a qualified doctor tweeting it makes it all the more damaging.

Scrolling through her feed, I'd imagine she'd 'accidentally' prescribe the wrong dose to a Jewish patient without feeling a shred of remorse.

Not a chance a person that emotionally volatile and openly biased can ever be allowed to take the Hippocratic Oath.
