Generally agree with the point you've made but think Llorente and Moura (2017) improved us in the short term. Bale was a decent loan signing but yeah ... when you look through the OP at all our signings since 2017 it's been awful...mind you having 3 managers between 2019 and 2023 was always going to be an issue

 

I wonder if our transfer strategy is hoping that Pisshead Merson says something along the lines of "You don't win anything with kids" and we just have to go through with the formality of winning the league

 

Neither of them improved the first team, not even close.

That was the main problem with our recruitment during that 5-year period. We mainly signed stocking fillers. And on the rare occasion we signed players who were clearly intended to improve the team, they didn't even improve the squad (Ndombele, Lo Celso and Sess).

Abysmal run of recruitment failures.

 

Which, again, does lend credence to the belief that Paul Mitchell carried Poch when it came to recruitment

I think the reason that none of our signings over that period improved the team was because previous recruitment had led to us having a first eleven which was essentially composed of players worth an average of £50m or more. Since our transfer budget was less than £100m back then, it was close to impossible to sign better players than the ones we had. I think we made two mistakes....we should have signed one or two expensive players each season rather than several cheap ones and we shouldn't have backed Pochettino's judgement.

Wanyama, Dembele
Eriksen, Dele, Son
Kane
....I am not sure that any of the current squad is actually going to displace any of them at peak form

And it was a lesson that should have been learned the summer we sold Bale, but it wasn't. Quantity can't replace quality. We should've signed two top quality players instead of 3 crap ones, 3 average ones and Eriksen with the Bale money.

 

This wouldn't have been such a problem were it not for the fact that our first team was coming apart at the seams during the same period.

So at a time when we were only signing squad players, the first team lost Wanyama, Rose and Dembele to injury, sold Walker and Eriksen and saw Toby and Jan start to decline with age.

It was the perfect storm for an absolute ****eshow.

 

There was also a collapse in common sense with which players were signed where
- We dropped £30m on Sissoko to be Dembele's understudy, as he'd be suspended for a few games
- At the end of one window we had three RBs in Trippier, Aurier and KWP
- We kept signing pacy impact sub wingers from Ligue 1 for Ligue 1 prices, rather than look for potential gems that fit the bill at (to pick a league out of the ether) Jupiler League prices
- We never even tried to sign a DM even when it was obvious Wanyama was breaking down

Realistically we’ve not heard a lot about anything to be honest.

Most of the incoming talk has been us lot saying who we’d like or not like more so than an actual concrete links.
