Former Man Utd legend linked with Sunderland job

Posted On Tuesday, November 29, 2011Tags: Man Utd news, man utd transfer news, Sunderland News, Sunderland transfer news

With Sunderland boss Steve Bruce under severe pressure from the Black Cat’s board and fans, reports today are suggesting that Manchester United legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could be lined up to replace him.

Reports are suggesting that Bruce is scheduled to meet with Chairman Ellis Short and Nial Quinn to discuss the 50-year-old’s would like to continue as manager and with the growing discontent amongst fans after seeing their side lose again this weekend, the board are reported to have sounded out potential replacements but the growing feeling is that Solskjaer is the man they want to take over.

The 38-year-old is currently managing his old club Molde in the Norwegian Premier League after a successful spell in charge of the Manchester United reserves, he went on to win the Norwegian championship in his first season in charge and has been labeled a Norwegian Pep Guardiola and Sunderland could pounce.

Its thought that the Sunderland board are keen to appoint a younger manager who could build his own squad with financial backing though it is not known if Solskjaer would be willing to leave Norway.

If we got McClaren id just stop watching till he got the boot!

And how come Lee ****in Clarke is in the running? Just goes to show how out of touch the media and bookies are like!

The only manager we have a chance of getting that will keep us up and make a difference and has ****in wone sumit in his career is MON!

Dont want Hughes, just another Man Utd ex player looking for a play thing to fill their time and make a **** load of money off!

I'm sorry lads but managing the 'Red Lion' in the Northern League hasn't suddenly made Ole the new SAF. Look at Villas-Boas? Top man in Portugal and yet 2nd fav for the chop after 13 games in England.

What we need is a safe and experienced pair of hands and thats got to be MoN.

What we dont need is to be a guinea pig to see if Solskjaer can shoot the **** in the big boys leagues.

Good luck to the lad as he was always one of my favourite players in the EPL but not for us at this moment imo.

I really dont see what some people have against MON like!

He has an excellent CV, better than most managers in the Prem!

If we go out and get him and back him i have no doubt what so ever that we will be a top 10 side year in year out and there will be no more flirting with relegation and we might just have a good, long over due cup run!

Feel free to book mark this Bruce in crowd and those who want Hughes AKA Bruce mark 2!

I dunno about any of this - I think Bruce is staying. How many times does Short have to say it? Does that include relegation? - yes, I think it does. I wonder if someone in the club hasn't decided that it would be easier to market a team with a Championship trophy in their hands than it is to market a bottom half Prem club, i.e. any success sells better than none at all. The question is how long ago that decision was made - someone was already working behind Bruce's back in September, witness the Gyan affair. I really don't know what's going on inside that club.

One thing I do know is that nobody on earth reads a game better than Ole Gunnar Solsjkaer. SAF would rarely start him, but he'd always get a game. The tactic was to sit him on the bench for a while and let him watch. When Alex did bring him on, he'd have read the game to perfection, knew exactly where the opposition's weakness was, walked right in there and popped in a goal or two - brilliant. I'm not saying Ole is the right man for the job - I don't even believe there is a vacant job. But Solsjkaer reads and understands a game better than anyone else I know and spent his whole career adapting himself to whatever the opposition was doing. Steve Bruce will never remotely equal him on tactics if he lives to be ninety.

This. MoN would be a superb appointment. He is a winner of trophies with clubs similar to ours. I don't dislike the thought of Hughes mind but he is a little dour and a bit of a Bruce clone.

It would be the culmination of 15 years of hoping and praying for me if O Neill were appointed.

What is the obsession with MON?

The man will demand yet another complete squad rebuild.

We need a someone who can come in and do well with the squad we have, while buying max 1 or 2 players per window. The only one I can see being able to do that (proven) is Moyes. Moyes have been an excellent manager in a team where he has no budget for new players and sells those who do well enough to attract the attention of the big boys. At least we will be able to offer him to ability to buy new players, even if we cant guarantee the ability to keep the best players.

Short has to at least talk to Moyes and attempt to bring him here - he has got to be 1st choice imo.

    MON for me.
Good motivator, Proven Premiership track record and a Sunderland fan.
Don't agree he'd want a total squad rebuild. We have a very decent squad if they were played correctly and were aloud to gain a bit of confidence.
Two possibly three new faces in January then push on till summer to see what's what.

    No.
    That said either would do.
The Sunderland link with MON does it for me. Plus he learnt his trade under Clough (Another Sunderland link). I know none of that means zip today in reality but it could just be a match made in heaven.

If Bruce is to be replaced, then Martin O'Neil would be my first choice. However, I think I would rather take a gamble on a hungry up and coming manager such as Solskjaer than Mark Hughes whose teams I have always found to be defensive and boring.

MON has a sick wife so I would not expect him to be able to give his full attention to his job
