After a Torn Miniscus playing football I did my first run today since the beginning of May, 10 weeks ago. My goal is to get back to at least one 5k run per week and under 25 minutes. I struggled today with the heat and lack of fitness, but I'm back on the road so I'm pleased, no matter what the time.
Have you had a torn miniscus . . . . I had no idea I'm booked to play football on Sunday morning after 4 months off after damaging soft tissues in my ankle leaving a shop (the step was about 6' high ). It's not better, but my doctor prescribed anti-inflammatories yesterday and said that I should be okay My goal is to get back to playing twice weekly like I did then before it's too late, and to continue cycling as I still do
The day I see a runner with a smile on their face is the day I'll start running. Only running I do now is to the toilet after a session
There's no better feeling than doing a 5k run with a beer afterwards. I might sign up for this. https://5kbeerchallenge.co.uk/
Used to do a bit of jogging and played walking football five or so years ago when I was 70, until I was crippled by Plantar Fiscitis (spelling) which stayed with me for nearly two years. I haven't tried either since in case it reappears, don't want that buggar again thank you.
I'm not a runner, due to a dodgy ankle I broke when I was younger that didn't heal properly (my fault, I thought it was just a sprain), but I do a lot of swimming. I started a couple of years ago and find it's a great way to keep fit. You use more muscles and it doesn't put as much strain on your joints. I generally go at least three times a week and aim to do at least 50 lengths in an hour long session (1250 metres) and right now I'm regularly doing well in excess of 50 lengths in a session. My aim is to swim a mile (1600m, 64 lengths) in under an hour.
I organise the Beer-2-Beer run in South Shields. 7 bars and 6 miles. Do every terrain going: Hills, fields, woods, roads, beach and parks it’s cracking.
Used to run a lot. Was part of my footballing fitness regime. Ran about 10 great north runs in a row at one point. Even ran a couple of marathons, although they tested my definition of enjoyment. Now, I have no chance of running. I am physio every month for a service. Knees are shot, no cartilege left (had the repairs on both knees but now nowt to repair amymore). Some days I walk down stairs like steptoes grandad on a morning . Running is a tremendous thing to do if you can. I always ran alone, often trails, just for me time. Used to get up about 5am on a Saturday morning and just run for 3 hours or so, magic seeing the sun come up like that.
I tried it about 3 years ago. I downloaded the couch to 5k app and used that. First session, I think it was run 1 minute, walk one minute, and repeat a few times. I couldn't bloody breathe man, thought me lungs were gonna explode!! I kept at it though, and it got easier, and at around week 4 something went in my knee. Went to docs who referred me to a physio for diagnosis, and turns out I had a torn meniscus!! It's ok now, but I've never tried it the jogging again, it's too bloody dangerous.
I do a fair bit of running. I used to to Parkrun - fastest 5km was 21:37. Currently trying to get up to speed for City to Surf at the end of August which is 12km. Looking forward to it. I get out for a run most days I’m on day shift during my break.
I love my running. Am a member of Elvet striders in Durham. Will be 49 in August and have a goal of a sub 1h45m half marathon before I hit 50. Need to knock 3 minutes 41 off my current pb! Just recovered for a torn ligament in my ankle and like to run or cycle at least 4 times a week. Not sure where you’re from, but might see you out there sometime. Well done on the 4km. Thats a good pace after injury
17 months later mines still in bits. Haven’t ran since, get up to a brisk walk and start to feel it. Finally bothered my arse to get booked into proper physio so fingers crossed I can get moving properly. Mornings are a killer when it’s been idle all night I can barely walk for about 2 minutes.
Yeah physio sorted mine out. But I did a park run at the weekend and felt like I’d never ran before!!!!! Lots of work before I’m back to my 8 minute miles!
I ride, swim and run. At the moment I could easily give up running and swimming but doubt I could ever give up getting out on the bike. I’m getting too old to be doing this sort of stuff but it’s addictive and I feel guilty if I haven’t done some sort of training.
I'm 78 and started running about 4 years ago. I downloaded a Couch to 5k programme and at first could not do even the shortest distance. I stuck at it and am now an avid 5k parkrunner despite the odd injury and life in general interrupting my training. Very much among those at the back of the pack but I'd recommend it for anyone regardless of age or fitness. It's a run not a race. P.S. I'm a leg amputee.
