He was prolific in the Eredivisie and players who do well there have decent success rates in places like England, Spain and Italy, so there was no reason to believe he wouldn't be able to do okay for us. As for being liked, you could see he had some good qualities like holding off defenders and explosive movement, it's just that he didn't have that extra half second the defenders would give you in Holland, once he figured out he had less time he started to panic in the box which reduced the accuracy of his shooting and touch, the longer he went without a goal seemed to affect him more than most. I believe if he played for a more attacking team, even a lower end Premiership team, he probably would have scored a few more than he did with us.
strikers are massive confidence players I really hope whoever comes in manages to get an early goal as it does them a world of good. Stewart scored on his debut so that was pressure off instantly. Same with Simms
The best strikers will go through dry spells, what seems to define them is how bullish they are during that time, imo. You almost need a veneer of fake confidence. I remember reading a .gov study a few years ago that said if you walk around acting aggressive your testosterone goes up, just goes to show that the mind is an incredible thing.
There is a good thread in itself there mate - average players you had a soft spot for. Shaun Cunnington was one of mine. Cost us a fortune and never seemed to get going through injuries. I rememeber an away game at Derby when I though we had unearthed the second coming of Bryan Robbo Robson, never have up on him.
Half of the teams aren't that good in the Championship. I was surprised when we were promoted. How many times have we created movement on the wings only to see nobody in the box. We didn't concede that many goals last season just didn't score enough. If this lad is an improvement there's no reason why he can't get 10-15 goals. I'm optimistic about all of this . New coach , midfielder and now a striker. Still loads of time to do other business in the window.
I think Mendy appears to be the missing piece in our attack, we've been crying out for someone who can hold the ball up and bring others into the attack, I think that's what Hemir was brought in for but hasn't worked out, mainly because he's young, raw and hasn't figured out how to use his strength, bit like Ekwah. Hopefully Mendy coming in can help to devleop Hemir, unless he goes out on loan.
100%. If you put Jobe v Hemir in striker situationals around the box i’d hedge my bets Hemir would come out on top pretty much every time. Much better finisher, much better in the air, quicker etc.
Phil smith on his live reckons we would be interested if jebbison is available for loan but that would be alongside a perm experienced striker too, I like that. Higher ups have liked jebbison for a while
Apparently Man Utd are going to send Joe Hugill on loan. He scored in a friendly against Rangers on the weekend. Would anyone want him to come back here for a season?
Not really. I do have a soft spot for the lads who come through our place but realistically he would likely be be behind Hemir, Mayenda, Rusyn and, if he comes in, Mendy. He did okay at Burton but didn't pull up any trees, from what I can see, his level is probably League One at this moment in time.
I think he’ll be a good player just not sure of another young loanee up top, although we know the impact Amad had. He done next to nothing at Burton on loan second half of the season just gone. I wouldn’t mind getting him as back up to someone like Mendy if we didn’t have so many young strikers ourselves just feels like we’ve left ourselves in a predicament after Burstows poor spell last season and can’t afford to prioritise another loanee up top.
Random thought but i really don't think Jobe gets in this squad for me. Browne, Rigg, Neil / Browne, Neil, AA / Neil, AA, Rigg maybe even ekwah are a better 3 man midfield than any ones where jobe is in and we should hopefully have an experienced striker come in too. Gonna be a weird one, if he keeps starting all the time surely there is a minutes clause
I think that's fair but an injury is all it takes and he's back in, also wondering if having a French coach can benefit him.
Was thinking exactly this this morning. My preferred midfield three would be Neil sitting with Rigg and Browne in front. No number 10. Then if a number 10 is needed, AA is the best option. Jobe and Ekwah would be backups for the 8 position. It's why I'd genuinely be open to sell him this window if the price was right. I know it's a risk as he could blossom, but he's so expendable. As you say, will be interesting to see how much his game time drops (or not).
