Off-topic? Yes, I am afraid nobody has mentioned chocolate and hazelnut confectionary yet.
The only thing about crisps which should be born in mind is that if you read the ingredients list, ready salted crisps contain potatoes, vegetable oil and salt. Any of the other flavours seem to have about 30 extra ingredients, and contain more E's than a Yorkshire folk song compendium.
As for my favourite, well I like cheese and onion, but cannot abide salt and vinegar. Which is why my daughter is always offering me some of hers. Yuk!

Does anyone remember the Smiths Crisps factory in Paulsgrove? I can't remember the name of the road and it has all changed now but there were several factories including Canda (C&A) along there.

I did an 8 hour overnight stint many many years ago. Have invariably never eaten crisps since then. Although, if desperate, I will buy some Walkers plain crisps, but I have to be desperate.

Cheese and Onion crisps are the worst thing ever conceived by the human mind.

I'm a Salt and Vinegar man myself. <ok>

I worked at the Smiths factory during the summer break from uni (1968-1971). Hard work and hated the shifts, but the money was useful. Hated the smell of cheese and onion flavouring...came in massive barrels and the smell was overpowering.

On the continent there are much fewer crisp flavours but they keep it to the good ones: salted, chilli and of course paprika :).

Yes, Smiths used to have the proper colours on their crisps. Cheese and onion should be in a green packet. Walkers, what were you thinking?

Twas (and still is) Southampton Road, 3rd eye<ok> Used to live there when first moved down to Portsmouth.

Can still remember the shocking smell from the factory when they were cooking !

Factory long gone, and site now a small housing estate.

PS. My favourite flavour is Smoky Bacon.

That's the power of advertising Channon - had to buy something to eat one day and the choice was crisps or crisps or crisps so Gary Lineker won. <laugh>

Ah yes, Southampton Road. I used to live in one of the Close's just off Cheltenham Road - we all used to go and swim in the creek just off the Southampton Road - there used to be a submarine rotting away there. <yikes>
