Not sure about this one. First of all, Irish isn't a race. Secondly half the Irish people I know are nicknamed Paddy and use the name as their sobriquet (I also have a welsh mate who we call Taff, who also uses the name himself). I mean, its not something I would just call an Irish person, without their leave, but its used quite a lot by brits as a term of endearment towards Irish friends.
