    That's a really tragic perspective.

Not saying you're wrong, I haven't lived in England for a long time now so I probably just don't know it that well anymore. I'd just hope we are a little more open minded and less bigoted than that as a people.

I stayed up until half four in the morning for the Slovakia game.

Safe to say I didn't miss another wink.

Personally I don’t give a shiny sh*te if we have an English manager and I think most would sharp their mind if it actually came down to it because there’s barely any decent English managers managing at a decent level for a start and even less that are available. I want success not be renowned for being losers with a nice style.

Apparently Gareth handed his notice to the FA.
They passed it back, he passed it to Bellingham, he passed it sideways to Kane who passed it back to the keeper!

How many really elite managers are interested in international management? Not many is my sense of it. They want the big bucks and international managers dont get that. The idea of Klopp managing England is laughable on many levels, not least because he would forgo his hero status with Liverpool fans who dont seem to recognise England. Imagine the reaction if he turned up for the 3 lions, might be worth it just for the laughs tbh.

Besides I cant stand Klopp anyway. Big angry man with a big old smile. Plays the media like a fiddle and they lap it up.

International football suits only some types of coaches. Ones that can achieve things with the minimum amount of time to coach players. Ones that are prepared to travel the country week in week out, be away from home for a lots of time, onea that can build trusted relationships with selfish club coaches. The list goes on.

Continuity is so important through the age groups. Look at the Spanish coach who has just won the trophy. U19, u21 and now mens winner. We would be missing a trick in my opinion if we didnt appoint Carsley and I sure that is Englands plan. Imagine the compo Newcastle will demand. Imagine the salary Poch will ask for. Imagine Klopp demanding Trent is captain, plays every minute, takes every free kick and penalty, and asks for £15m a year <laugh>

Sideways backward boring football that's got us to two major finals and three major semi-finals. Southgate has achieved more in 8 years than any other manager in more than 50 years. We wouldn't have gone as far as we did playing gung ho football.

To be honest it's only in the last few minutes of games, or when we were losing, that we've abandoned the 'Sideways backward boring football' ...

... and then we've gone back straight back to it like we did after the equaliser in the final.

No one wants reckless gung ho football but no one really wants success to be off the back of caution and penalties.

I've seen England become the master of the 5 yard pass with the instep since Ince and Wilkins perfected it ...

... there's been a few brief exceptions, like Venables, but it seems ingrained at FA HQ.

But also contributed to his team coming second in a one horse race.

If you read some of my posts subsequent to the one you've quoted you'll see that it's not my taste in football either and you'll also see why I think playing that way is the correct approach in international tournaments, which is amply demonstrated by the results Southgate has achieved.

I meant the Bundesliga. But it was actually worse. His Bayern came third in a one horse race!

How do you know. Can never be proven one way or the other. Personally I think if he had played Watkins instead of Kane, used his subs such as Toney, Palmer & Gordon a lot better I think we could have won it.
However no point debating it as neither of us can prove our point.

I dont share the opinion on Venables. I remember a pretty average period under his tenure. Maybe the Dutch game is the one we all remember. The performance against Switzerland was awful, against scotland not much better and arguably we did not deserve to win. Spain I thought were better and we did it on penalties. Role reversed against Germany. In a home tournament I think it was underwhelming.

Go back to pre tournament friendlies and it was pretty dire stuff a lot of the time. Perhaps if he had qualifying games it may have beem better. But overall my memories of Venables arent very positive, and certainly much less than my memories under Southgate.

And I seem to remember venables changing his formation around to get Ince back in his side for the semi final :emoticon-0105-wink:
