OK a step different than the prem! and all this "done as much as he can approach" doesnt really sit squarely!...... we are argumentally 2nd best team in Europe! Although you could say one of the best 4 teams in Europe! He has in his tenure uncovered [ he picked them out to play ] a number of the next generation of players thatwill go into 2026 world cup.
he showed by his "management during this contest" he is evolving!
Our media is crap absolutely pure pooo, we lose and the euphoria is off with his head instead of well played against the better team and next time make it count! take 32+ teams and there is only 1 winner ... in domestic football there is anything from 2 two to 6/7 teams.
Should GS chooose to stay then so be it ... best man for the 2026 WC.....IMHO

My thoughts too - but like I said in the political thread if you always do what you’ve always done….. etc.

Overall, Southgate has a pretty good record - we’ve been there or thereabouts in successive tournaments. My issue with him is that he doesn’t seem to want to play to the teams’ strengths. He played a defensive game when we had the talent to go for it and attack teams - and he doesn’t seem to be able to learn and adapt.
Taking nothing away from Spain, who were the best team in the tournament and deserved to win it, we had the players to have made a better go - not just scraping through and constantly having to come from behind to win.
Maybe it is time for a change. Either that or we get used to getting to Quarter and semi finals - even finals, but never winning.
Crikey this is so much like Bristol City it’s unreal!!!!!!!

I would just add, I just wish at times he’d be more attack minded, we have very good attacking options, but don’t make enough of them.

IMHO we’ve evolved into a team that is now expected to be in the last 16 at the very least - rather than wondering if we’d actually qualify for tournaments.
We need a change if we are going to take the next step though.

I did not understand what you meant, hence I asked a question.

    Evolving how? Identity? Playing style?

As a younger man I went to two world cups and four European championships. I expected England to reach the last sixteen, and England did in all except one (92). I don't think I ever thought England would not qualify for a tournament even with Graham Taylor in charge.

    Garfs gone.

As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England. It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all.

"But it’s time for change, and for a new chapter. Sunday’s final in Berlin against Spain was my final game as England manager."
support has meant the world to me. I’m an England fan and I always will be.

"I look forward to watching and celebrating as the players go on to create more special memories and to connect and inspire the nation as we know they can.

"Thank you, England – for everything. Let someone else get booed and have cups thrown at them ."

We’ve had some dire appointments over the years; Graham and Peter Taylor, the Wally with the Brolly, Capello……….
Southgate hasn’t been the worst by a long shot, but he’s taken us as far as he can.
Time for a change though. Right decision.

Let’s hope the FA make a decent appointment as his replacement.

A sad day really, has achieved some memorable moments. What I dont get is the hypocritical "football fans" that state things like "it is the results that count / no matter how we! / etc" and are then on the England managers back saying he was crap... didnt have a clue! well regarding the last comment there ...look in the mirror!

Not going to do a table of comparisons going back to 1966 but in mind I have stored some of Englands achievements and failures and GS shines out from some of the lesser performers!

edit PS... Just seen BCRW post 212

It feels graceless to Mr Southgate, but that is uneven without context. The tournament structures have been altered. There are more teams in tournaments now, and so more teams in the knock out stages who are lower ranked.

The runs England had in 2018, 2022 and 2024 to the semi finals are remarkable by noting who England did not play.

Decent bloke four years too late. i thought Southgate took England as far as he could v Italy that was the big one expected to win they were so beatable annd and at wembley and he defended sat back decent bloke awful coaching. Losing to France and Spain all expected decent bloke out coached thats the type and in this tournament Englands have been ****. Stinking football nearly put out on their arse by Slovakia!!

You can only beat the teams you meet, the teams you don’t, have often already been knocked out. Comparing different generations is difficult, but I don’t think anyone denies he’s left things in a much better place than when he took over. That’s pretty unique whichever era you compare him too.

Yes. That is the point. The comparison is uneven. In World cups and European championships first stage knock out games were Argentina and Spain. Now with the increasing tournament sizes the games have significantly altered.

Yes, but I went on to say he’s left us in a better place than when he took over, which in itself is an achievement.

I hear what Cliftonville is saying. We have been lucky (on paper) playing against lower ranked sides on our route to the final, but considering the European Champions’ winning goal was right at the end of the game - and their lead protected by a frenzy of last minute clearances off the line, there can’t have been much difference between the sides.
Spain were the best team throughout the tournament. We were godawful at the start and although we improved, Spain were still better in the final and deserved their win - but it was bloody close - it wasn’t a walk in the park for Spain.

I think we're in a better place solely down to haveing better talent available than we did when he took over.

    Edit
I have much respect for him as a man and stepping down on his terms amplifies my admiration toward him.
